Updating COMMAND software

I have an early 11 E350 (B/W screen over the speedometer, too), it does not have the latest COMMAND in it. The only reason I know that is because it won't display SMS.

Two questions:

1) How do I know what version I have now?
2) What does it cost to get it updated to the newest version?

Thanks guys.

1 - You need to enter ENGINEERING MENU to learn what version of COMAND you have
2- You need to hit the dealer , sorry don't have any idea about the cost
Meanwhile, displaying messages should not have anything to do w/ the software because I read that Blackberry users can be able to see SMS w/o getting any bluetooth module even with NTG 4.0

Mine is NTG 4.5 but I can't see the messages either lol

mike, you don't need to pay a penny for sw update. if you have even an ok relationship with your service adviser/tech, they'll help you out with that. if not, shoot me a pm.

A Few
I've spoken to my dealer about updating COMMAND - it's not software, it's hardware. There's some kind of module that needs to be updated, it's basically a new COMMAND so thousands of dollars. I trust him since they've done some non-Mercedes approved work to my car in-house (such as Airmatic STAR lowering).

You can't do it unless you swap out the COMMAND module for a new one.

Stupid, I know

Are you saying that you have a NTG4 vs NTG4.5? If so that does require swapping out the COMAND HU, as the NTG4.5 can handle SD cards, and the NTG4 handles CF Cards. Depending on the model year it would be a straight swap without modification. On my model year it requires some additional work to be accomplished before it will work. There are NTG4.5 COMAND HUs available on ebay for a lot less than what the dealer offers.

COMAND updates are NOT free

The updates cost about $250 and MBUSA recommends it be done annually. If you can get a dealer to do it, congratulations. The only way to get it free is for dealership to conclude there is a defect in the system.
One caution; some people on this site have had problems after updates installed or it took several hours to do it.
