Which Mobil 1 to use
MB dealer sells Mobil 1 "ESP Formula M" 5W-40. Is there a regular Mobil 1 equivalent that can be bought other than from the dealer (Wal-Mart etc) that meets all required specs? Dealer charges approx $8. Any warranty problems? Called Exxon Mobil and got vague answer.

0W-40 is the one that reads is approved by MB. Can be bought in auto parts stores and also Walmart. WM price I think is like $6.40 for a quart.

5W-40 Mobil 1 is a low sulfur version of 0W-40 and is recommended for Mercedes diesels. Since it's approved for both gas and diesel engines, most dealers use 5W-40 for both gas and diesel.
If you have a gas version of a Mercedes you can use either 0W-40 or 5W-40.
Mercedes have a list of approved oils but it's easiest to just stick to Mobil 1 which is widely available in the U.S.

The oil you mention is MB Spec 229.51...which is meant for at least some diesels (including mine,2011).I change my oil twice a year (April and October) and use it during the summer.Don't know which,if any, gassers it's approved for although I wouldn't be surprised if it's not approved for any because of its special makeup.

221.51 is the spec for Merc Diesels. 221.5 is the spec for gassers.
This has been discussed a lot on the W204 forum. One of that forum's moderators, Glyn Ruck, is a retired oil company fellow and is incredibly knowledgeable on this subject. According to Glyn it is IMPOSSIBLE for any oil to meet both standards simultaneously.
Suggest you research the subject on the W204 forum.

Don

For what its worth...
I ran Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE in my E550 for 5000 miles.
Did not improve gas mileage, versus Mobil 1 0W-40.
Went back to 0W-40.
