Hi! Firstly nice car, secondly it is not an AMG in the true sense of the word but has AMG body kit, wheels etc The E and S stand for Economy and Sport modes.

congrats and welcome aboard, kwihk1 ! i don't think it'll hurt the car in s mode but you'll find yourself drive a bit more aggressive in that mode instead of e. so better stay with e during break in period and you'll enjoy the s that much better later . as for the badge, are you sure you were not looking at an e63 ?

E starts the car from a stop in second gear and shifts quicker gear to gear, more softer luxury feeling to drive in, while sport mode starts in first gear and holds the gears a little longer before shifting to stay in the pwerband. Good luck with the new car, very nice..

The default position is in E position. This may be preferable during breakin. The manual recommends driving at variable speeds, not using the kickdown passing gear and not exceeding 4000 rpm for the first 1500 kms.

As far as the AMG badge, it does not belong on your car. You are the second new owner that says their dealer puts it on the cars with the AMG kit. The last person was from Toronto and I assume it's a dealer from that area. The only cars that should have that badging should be AMG cars and in Canada that would cost you an extra 35k over and above your E300.

Congrats on your new purchase. I think you now own the best car for the buck that MB produces.

Just my opinion.

As RobbieRob said in his post the E-mode bypasses the first gear. The car will start with the second gear from a stop.

S-mode makes the car to use the first gear when starting from stop.

For the above reasons I really recommend to use the S-mode for the break-in period. Break-in period is meant to be driven easily using everything in the transmission there is to use. Driving in E-mode will not give any break-in "treatment" for the 1st gear!

And like BenzV12 said, vary your speed but you can also use the manual shifters to vary the engine speed when the car moves at the constant speed.

The manual shifters are not as "manual" as a real manual gear control is. In my car it just sets the higherst gear. Normally you have 7 speeds for use but if you use the manual shifters you can bring that highest gear in use down (unless you over-rev the engine and the protection steps in and makes gear higher automatically) and then move it up as the car goes.

Enjoy your new ride!
