2012 E350 Bluetec Update

I wanted to share an update on my E.

I bought a CPO 2012 E350 Bluetec 7 months ago (had 9,000 miles on the odometer.) Iridium Silver P1, comfort seat, distronic, pano roof, black interior.

I've put about 20,000 miles on it since then. I average about 40,000 miles a year. 95% highway, 5% city.

Issues: no mechanical issues. I had a annoying rattle/creak in the instrument display but a quick trip to the dealer (and some foam strips) solved that. I don't like the run flats (somewhat harsh on rough roads) and will be replacing them soon.

MPG: this is where I've been amazed. I always read that diesels got better than advertised mileage but I was not expecting this. Using pen and paper (not the trip computer) I've average 37.8 mpg over the last 7 months. I routinely achieve 40 mpg on certain highway runs. My best tank so far was 41.7 mpg. This is my first diesel.

When I took it in for the 20,000 mile service, only 2 gallons of urea were needed, confirming that highway cruising uses much less of the stuff than city driving.

Driving impressions: I've driven BMWs for the most part (my fav was my e39 540i) and while certainly not on par with their handling and even weight distribution, the E is a great cruiser and doesn't pretend to be anything else. The E is quiet and comfortable although I do wish it had ventilated seats.

The trunk is huge!

I'll check in again at 50K.

AT 50K miles the car is hardly broken in. Go 100K miles, you'll see good and reliable performance. I get same miles per gallon as you do. 9K miles CPO? Wow, how did you find anything like that? Good luck.

It's nice to read positive feedbacks on Bluetech engines as well . That car should be a beast considering high amount of torque specs and a good highway traveler

My E350 Bluetec and now my S-Class diesel have been great. The current 3.0 diesel is a great motor, from Autos to Sprinter vans, the engine is simply a beast. Brabus now has a tune for the Bluetecs that take them to Over 300hp and almost 600 ft-lbs of torque. Plus, it meets all emissions and improves fuel economy. Try doing that with a gas engine.

ImInPA,
Congratulation! S350 BlueTec! You'll love it. Does it have a different sound system than E350?

Mine is a 2011, and I am averaging (through Fuelly) a little better than 30mpg. At the 30K tune up, it took about 5 gallons of DEF.

I guess my driving must either be more city or more agressive than your, or perhaps a little of both.

Monday I did a 500 mile highway trip, and was really looking forward to checking the mileage on a trip where I put her up on the highway, set the cruise to 72 and burnt the day. Unfortunately, I was fighting heavy headwinds all day, and only got about 29mpg. Hopefully the return tomorrow will be better.

All in all, every day I am more in love with the car. I just had my one year anniversary, and have put 20K on her.

Dang that's a lot. I only get 32 cruising 75-80 on the Interstate. But i'm not complaining. Distronic is the Bomb! The Car is the Bomb! The only thing better would prob be the S Class Bluetec.

It is an HK and mostly the same layout with a few differences. The front doors in the S have 7.9" dual voice coil woofers versus the 6 3/4" single voice coil woofers in the E. There is a tweeter in the center channel dash, and, the amplifier is different, containing all channels in a single unit versus the separate sub amp in the E. The bass response in the S is much better than in the E. The rest of the system is very similar. The S is based on the 3.x version of COMAND and does not support BT Audio. Hard to believe but true. I t is a feature I do not use, but it is hard to believe MB does not offer this in the S. Go figure. While I only have about 11K now (nowhere near broken in) I am finding that the S is returning 2-3 mpg less than the E. It does weigh close to 1000 lbs. more than the E. City mileage is also less than the E350 Bluetec. I am sure some of this is weight related and some of it attributable to the 4Matic. Al-in-all, the S is amazing. I am loving it.

ImInPA,
Thank you for your response and more details on the car. Different woofer size should make noticeable difference in sound quality. You'll love the baby for a long time come!

Well, part of it is that I have a diesel vehicle and if I get an additional diesel vehicle, I will have an excuse to get a larger fuel storage tank and buy diesel fuel in bulk. I figure the ROI will take about 2 - 3 months to pay for the tank. So I am waiting for the chance LOL! I think the savings in fuel costs would be worth it (mpg and purchase cost vs my current 2010).

I was going to say put the tank next to your house and fill it with heating oil, but then I took a look at the prices and it is almost the same as diesel at the pump :-(

2011 Blutec with 12K miles....the last 500 mile trip on intererstates, including getting to the interstates and to my destination, I got 36.0 MPG driving a relatively steady 5 mph over the speed limit using cruise control. No complaints here.

I put 2 1/2 gals of fluid in at 10K miles (didn't fill the tank) and I'll add another 2 1/2 at about 15K miles. It's at most a 10 minute job with a friend....it's only minutes if you fill at at truck stop, but I want to know exactly what goes in just in case there is a problem.

Where do they claim that?

You cannot get that kind of torque out of my older 648.961 straight six 3.222 cc engine, yet alone the 3.0 L V6.

How can Brabus honestly claim that much factory advertised torque increase by some 200 ft/lb?

What mine did on the dyno is posted below.
I was surprised to see some 15 + ft/lb pounds over the stock advertised figures.

You're pretty much on average. The on board computer display is grossly inaccurate when it comes to fuel economy ... it's WAY off.

That figures out to 34.938 miles per gallon.
The dash computer showed 37.1 mpg for 693 miles at an average speed of 36 miles per hour.
BTW, that is the closest the dash computer has ever been with the actual tank mileage.

You might want to take the time and trouble to view my Fuelly entrees for the last 29305 miles.
The last test was for nineteen (19) days and of course included many cold starts and some in the city driving.
Oh and the car was filled at the same station both times with the car at the same pump with
it facing the same direction at that pump. About as accurate as I know how to make it.

I did not make an efforts to 'baby-it' either.
Had I done so, you would see reading up into the mid 37 to 38 mpg range.

DHG
Yes, older models were more efficient, but this is the W212 sub-forum, where 45+mph on the dash computer isn't even possible going downhill with a tailwind.
