How do you copy MP3 from computer to COMMAND Music register?
I've read through the manual and tried to follow their instructions and it didn't work.
I've got 4 or 5 GB of MP3's on my computer I'm trying to copy onto the music register in command. I've tried copying it to a 2gb SD. It can play from the SD but doesn't give me option to copy it to music register.
So manual says to copy the files to a CD/DVD then copy from the CD/DVD to music register, which I did, and it also plays fine but doesn't give me an option to copy to music register.
The only time I get an option to copy to music register is if I actually insert a regular music CD, then it gives me option to copy and takes a few minutes to copy the whole CD.
A lot of these MP3's I have on the computer don't have regular music CD's (purchased via amazon or google play), so how do I get these onto the command music register without having to convert and burn them to music cd first?
thanks

best thing to do is get a usb adapter and hook up an external hard drive, then copy it from the hard drive to the car. I've heard this will also download album art and display in COMAND although I've never tried, I have an ipod classic I just leave always connected in the glove box.

I have downloaded songs from CD's onto my computer and then made a CD and loaded that into Music Register just like any other CD. Also had a friend who copied a CD his daughter made for him from songs she had downloaded from internet. That loaded to Music Register just like any other CD.

Ok so I just copied about 4GB of MP3 from my computer to a USB flash drive, plugged it into the USB port under the center arm rest, it showed up and let me play the songs, but still no option to copy it to music register.
Does it have to be a hard drive and not a flash drive?

Per manual you can only copy from a traditional music CD tothe register. I bought a PCMCIA to SD adapter and use that for music. Got a 16GB CD card for 10 bucks and filled it with music from my PC. Popped that into my 2010 E550’s dash and it works like a charm. Link to the adapter I bought isbelow:

Regardless of what the manual says, in the US, MB doesn't allow mp3 files to be copied to the hard drive.
This is, undoubtedly, a concession to the RIAA's obsession with piracy.
CD's with music in the form of CDA files can be copied to the car's hard drive.
It doesn't make sense, of course. The fact that you have a CD with CDA files on it doesn't mean it is an original, or that you bought it (it could be borrowed) so it could still be pirated.
The fact that you are trying to copy MP3 files doesn't mean the music is pirated. It could have been purchased legally at various online sites.
MB is just trying not to incur the litigeous wrath of the RIAA, IMHO.

Don

Thanks dfordham, that makes a lot of sense. I guess I wasted most of a day trying to get it to work.

I can only copy store bought CD's to my car. I burn music on to a CD-R in audio format and still won't give me the option to copy to the register.
With that said, since it takes forever to copy a whole CD to the music register, I don't even bother with it.

Important notes:
I live in Europe ! Sunny Spain.
I have the latest software installed on my 2014 model-year cars.
I have used a very high-speed 32GB USB stick.
Make sure it is formatted in FAT32.
I transferred the songs from iTunes on my iMac to the USB stick using Export for iTunes app (for sale on the Mac App Store) and Clean my Drive (also for sale on the Mac App Store), which have quite reasonable prices.
I had to to repeat the process many times until I got it right !
First, any songs with a slash in the name of the artists, song, or album will not be transferred...
Change the slash for a dash, for instance.
Check for any Artwork, so that it does not exceed 1MB or it will be left blank.![smash](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smashfreak.gif)
You can resize it by using preview and storing it with reduced file size.
Select the playlist you want to copy.
Select the format Artist, Album, Song for the export in the app.
If you don't run Clean my Drive after you use Export for iTunes, you will find a 4kb file with a similar name for every song and the music register will foul up.![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
When you have the USB ready with the proper files, insert it and select music register. If you have music you want to overwrite, delete it first. You have an option to delete the whole register at once. Then select copy musical MP3 files, select USB stick, select all files, continue, start... In my case it took about ten minutes to copy 9GB of songs with 256kb bit rate, just over 1000 songs in apple lossless format.
Good luck and happy listening ! Hope this helps a few more people enjoy the Music Register.

When copying from an audio CD will it record it as compressed audio or will it keep the original file size. 10GB will not hold very many full CDs if not compressed. I see no option to choose a compression scheme.
For what it's worth, my manual states I can copy mp3, wma and aac. In reality, I can not!

The manual has always said it could be done but, in reality, it can be done only outside the US.

Not that long
[QUOTE=dfordham;6101141]It keeps the original file size and takes FOREVER.
My MR has over 1,500 tracks or "songs" on it. These are in 171 folders. A folder is genrally one CD, but I actually combine CD's by same artists into single folders. So it is probably well over 200 CD's and some are double CD's.
You have to pick the destination folder before you start Recording to do this.
Still have room for more!
Takes about 20 minutes to download a CD. It may be playing a few songs, but is downloading the entire CD at same time.
Cautions: You can change or enter titles as you drive, one letter at a time. Can also select which tracks to record. Very unsafe and is ironic that MB lets you do this while vehicle is in motion.
Also, if Gracenotes does not recognize the CD, it will download it into a miscellaneous or some other folder. May end up with several CD's in this folder and have to open it and then open each one to see what they are. Best to give the folder a title. Also makes it easier to find what you are looking for later.
Happy Motoring!

Well, I'm guessing you are either outside the US or you have a different software build than I do. My car will not copy anything. It will only record directly from an audio CD. And, it appears to copy uncompressed. There is no folder support that you mentioned. Now, I'm very new to this having picked up my car only yesterday, so maybe there's something there I'm not seeing.

edbro: I live in U.S. and my car is a U.S. car. I'm sure the software is probably the same, but could be different.
As I said earlier, I copy from a CD that was made on a computer or that I purchased. My most recent comment was re: how much can be downloaded and how long it takes per CD (about 20 mins.). Each CD I have downloaded has been anywhere from 30 mins. in length to 80 mins.
I do not believe it compresses the files, but I really don't know.

Compressed audio loses a bit of fidelity but that would probably not even be noticed. On the other hand, compression allows you to store a lot more audio in the same space. That is why we have MP3 players instead of wav players. A decent mp3 is less than 1/4 the size of a wav file.

A lot of these MP3's I have on the computer don't have regular music CD's (purchased via amazon or google play), so how do I get these onto the command music register without having to convert and burn them to music cd first?
thanks
