Wiper blades going off upon startup?
I had a 2013 E350 for a few months. I would keep the wiper blade setting to "automatic low" - the first notch on the lever. I had no issues.
I ended up trading in the vehicle for the same one but newer (long story). Now whenever I start the car the wiper blades go on for one swipe. Its annoying. The only way to stop this is by turning the automatic rain sensor feature off which IMO defeats the purpose of having it.
I called MB customer service. They spoke with a technical adviser who indicates that its normal for the wipers to do 1 swipe. He said that if they didnt do that there would be a light on in the instrument cluster indicating there is a problem with the rain sensor. I don't buy it. My previous identical vehcile of the same year did not have the wipers swipe upon every startup nor did it have any issues with the sensors or illminated cluster lights.
What do you guys say? Does your E350 do this on start up?

Nothing needs fixing. RTFM! You are actually not supposed to leave the wipers on.
They are automatic in regards to regulating the speed and frequency of wipes and not automatic in the same way that your head lights are.

I've left mine on Auto [...] and it doesn't starts up when I start my car.
It only starts when it senses rain on the windshield.
I've done this on my previous vehicles (2011 ML350BT and BMW 335D) and not once did the wiper blades activate when the engine is started.

I had an Asian make where the auto wipers did this, but I don't think my 2010 E does it. Regardless, should not leave in Auto as it may come on when you do not want it to, as the manual says. Also, it might come on if you used an automatic car wash and they would run at full speed fighting with the water/brushes/etc.

It's funny that Mercedes manual says can scratch winshield when dry, then how come when I activate the spray, it doesn't spray first but wipes first? My other car, an Acura mdx sprays first, then wipes.

Based on your answers it appears clear the wipers should not come EVERY time the ignition is started. Tjdehya's reply is premised on the basis there is something visually or physically interfering with the sensor. Thats not the case here. Without fail, every start up the wipers go on for 1 swipe and that will need to be fixed. Back to the dealer. I will let you know what happens.

When you bring it in ask the SA to try their demo E to see if it has the same issue with the wiper.

Glad, I have found this topic thanks to search function working well . I always leave mine in AUTO with the highest sensitivity level and it worked as it should until today lol
I started up the car and as soon as the car roared back into life, I saw a wiping action , at 1st I thought it was a glitch or fluke whatever but it kept swiping across the windshield and I had to take the matters in my hand and I begun to mess up with some settings .(start / stop the car twice with purpose ,playing with the headlamp switch , deactivating Adaptive Lights and reactivate and such other stuff )
I don't wanna bore you with a long prose this is why I am ending here .Long story short, as OP did I had to turn off the wipers and I swear my windshield is clean and dry
