Smile Need help with price on 2012 E550 ASAP

Hi guys,

So my sister and I are in the market to purchase a 2012 CPO E550 for our parent's 40th wedding anniversary. The car that we are interested in is detailed below:

2012 E550 4MATIC sedan
Miles: 22,000
Options:
Premium Package 2
Lane Tracking Package
AMG Package

List Price 49,992
Negotiated Price: $49,000

We are going to finance the car through MB Financial so their current promotion
covers the first 2 payments for a total deduction of another $1200 from the $49,000.

The dealer is also charging a document fee of $390 which I thought was rather high.

What do you guys think of the price? The inventory on CPO E550 is very slim in our area and as a result not a lot of leverage for negotiating.

Please let us know what everyone thinks.

Many Thanks!

I believe that there is some more room on that price.
We know that there are not a whole lot of E550s but I would use the BMW 550i as leverage when negotiating.

Thanks for the quick reply! That is a great idea, I just quickly searched BMW CPO 2012 550 Xdrive and there is not a lot of inventory of that car either. The lowest priced listed was $53,999. That vehicle does have 2100 less miles, but the E550 I'm looking at seems to be better optioned out. Do you think I can knock off another 1500-2000?

Not sure where you are located. Last week when I visited my local dealer, they had a 2013 E550 4matic on the lot. Brand new. $71+ MSRP, the sales person I spoke to said they will easily knock $20k off for anyone that wanted it. making it just over $51k for a brand new 2013.
This is in Central CA if you are interested.

Wow!!! How are they even making a profit? Based on your numbers that is about 28% off MSRP. I live on the opposite side of the country, so it would be a no go for me. You can "flip" that car on the east coast and make a decent profit if you have the time. Do they have a lot of 550's sitting on the lot? At that price I feel like I'm getting ripped off over here! Maybe some one will see this and lives around your area can take advantage of it.

It's a 2013 left over. Last 2013 E they have on the lot so they're trying to get rid of it. the 2015's will be on the lot in 4 to 5 months.

If I was you and the price thenew3 quoted is correct I would be flying to get this car ASAP and drive it home in two days. $20 000 is well worth it.

Unless you have to pay the sales tax in two states doing it...

You could have it shipped for around $1,500 or maybe less in a covered car carrier. That could make sense as well. Does seem like a great price. Thanks. Regards. Ned.

I don't know what options are on it. I wasn't looking for an E550, just walked by it as we went to look at their inventory of E350's on the lot.

I know it is white, 4matic and had a sticker just north of $71k.

It is located at MB of Monterey.

Yeah that looks like its it. I don't like how dealers don't list options on the websites.

Looks like they still have it if their web site is accurate.

I live about 3 miles from them and drive by often on the way to my son's basketball games at the YMCA. Often they will have cars parked on the edge of the lot with big $20,000 off MSRP written on the windshield.

They have a lot of high end AMG vehicles on their lot as well.

Obviously a 1st world country dilemma, but nonetheless a dilemma

So given the information is true on the 2013 E500 and the dealer would part with it for let's say 50K what would you guys do?

Aiming for $50,000 not sure of finance rate right now- no promos by dealership

The intangibles: My sister and I actually prefer the blue color over the white. We would rather give our parents a brand new car as opposed to a "used" car. The CPO car seems to have more options which will be useful than the brand new vehicle.

What's everyone's thoughts? Thanks!

Blind spot assist and lane keep assist used to be a part of the Driver Assist Package that also included the Distronic cruise control. Are you sure the CPO car doesn't have that too? If it does then you definitely should go with the 2012 option and even if not it seems to have plenty of options that are very handy, like the Keyless-GO and adaptive lights.

With the options the 2012 is a much better equipped car and seeing this difference I might lean towards it. 22000 miles is not much for these cars and obviously you would have the CPO warranty up to 100000 miles on it.

My previous post about going for the $20 000 discounted car was based on the assumption it has the P2 AND Driver Assist Package as the sticker price is similar to what my car with these options was. Now I see it does not have P2 nor does it seem to have the true Driver Assist Package. And it does not have Airmatic either but this probably offsets with the 4Matic that I don't have (and don't need or want either).

Apples vs. Oranges.

If you want to give your parents a new car, do it. Your preference of color may be very different from your parents. If you want to give them something more affordable, go with the used. If you want to give them better options that they might enjoy, again the used car is more attractive. Either way, your parents are lucky to have children like you who can afford a purchase like this.

I noticed that the used e550 has the comfort suspension which is an unusual option for an e550, most would come with the sport suspension or the optional airmatic. That may not be a terrible thing in the crappy road northeast but is that what you want? The used e does have a nicer option list but it is used, new is nicer! As others have said, it is one hell of a present no matter which way you go! A new e350 wouldn't be too shabby either and might be an easier score at your price point, the 2012 and later have the new ballsy v6 engine which is quite nice. The current e's are the finest overall luxury sedan ever made IMO. Tanks, solid and reliable. Regards. Ned.

These are some salient points to consider. However, the most important part is that last piece. My sister and I are very fortunate to be in the position of being able to afford this. However, ultimately it goes back to the of sacrifices that our parents made which enabled us to be in the positions that we are in. At the end of the day it's only a car, yes it is a mercedes and all. I think my sister and I wanted this for our parents because we just wanted them to feel that all that hard work was worth it.

Hi Ned,

Can you please tell me more about the comfort suspension, is that the Avant Garde version of the EClass or something else. I test drove the car and I didn't feel the ride was to soft. Is there a downfall to this type of setup? Thanks!

I wouldn't say there is a downfall, per se. Just most people who would order a performance version of the e class would tend to order it with either the sport suspension or the airmatic. The comfort suspension as the name suggests will be more compliant than the sport suspension which will be stiffer and handle somewhat better. Your parents may actually appreciate the comfort suspension especially if they live here in the Northeast with the bad roads. It is a matter of preference neither good nor bad. The comfort suspension will be more forgiving than the airmatic suspension as well. May be a great choice and as rare as e550's are, one with the comfort suspension may be rarer. Thanks. Regards. Ned.

Thanks for clarifying! I think my parents will probably enjoy this suspension setup over the stiffer suspension. I actually just put the deposit and completed the paperwork for the car. We decided we will move forward since we are really happy overall with the car. Pickup is scheduled for this Saturday I hope everything goes smoothly.

Now if someone made a 40 year anniversary hood badge for it....

All I can say is you and your sister are super good folks as probably are also your parents too.

Happy anniversary for them!

Thanks for the well wishes Ned! I will tell my parents that a lot of people put their time and energy into finding this car for them on this forum. Then I have to explain to them what a forum is

Any ideas on how to surprise them with the car?

Hi Arrie, thank you for the very kind comments and the well wishes for my parents. Do you guys have any ideas on how to surprise them?

This is what my sister and I were thinking, I would have my sister take them out for lunch and while they were out I would park the E550 in their garage. When they came back and opened the garage to park their car they would see the E550 with a bow on it.

We are open for ideas, so please chime in

Or you can take them to dinner at a place that has valet parking, pre-park the E550 first, after dinner give the valet ticket for the E550 so they bring up the new car for your parents.
