MB says Apple's Car Play may be retrofitted!

Costly?
MB currently has an adapter kit for the iPhone 4 that is costly, and does much less than CarPlay is capable of doing, so you are probably correct.
I think we can agree though that ANYTHING would be preferable to the current MB apps package that is currently offered which uses remote servers that make the connection speeds so slow that it is an embarrassment for MB to advertise it as "internet connectivity".

All the hardware pieces are already in the car, except the touchscreen. They just have to redo the whole COMAND software to utilize Carplay. Most likely through the form of a firmware upgrade, and coming from Mercedes it won't be cheap. But if it's a grand I'd be able to swallow that.
