Fuel cap & effective range

I took delivery of my 2014 E250 BT the first week of January and have close to 7000 miles on it. From literature the diesel capacity is 21 gallons which is the same as the gas versions from what I have read. Whenever I have filled up, I have never taken on 19gallons or more and this is with running the car pretty low vs. the fuel gauge and range display, where I should be at near empty based on my experience from my GM SUV range display.

Is this a common theme among the E350 gas or like that what the car says is empty is not truely empty or on my first oil change, etc should I have the dealer check that out and possible re-calibrate or something.
From experience what is the actual usable fuel amount?

I am wondering how far I can really go, as 40+mpg on the highway I can go quite a ways still when the car tells me it is empty. I have been using the fuelly site so I know if 21 is the limit, maybe 20.5 usable I can go another day without having to get diesel.

I have fit 20 gallons in the 2011 E350bt. I thought there was less than 1/4 gallons left per the fuel gauge but I guess there was more.

Check my fuelly page, I put in 20.00 once and over 19 twice.

Was really nervous on the 20~!!

Seems like most manufacturers understate their true capacity. Part of that could be to avoid being used when someone runs out of gass because they couldn't judge where the needle was in relation to the line.

Do most people run their tanks all the way to dry? I try to fill up when I get down to under a 1/4 tank.

My 20.00 tank was barely over the border into upstate NY from Canada.
I am so cheap I didn't want to pay the Canadian price for diesel fuel. My other two 19's were the same: gotta get over the border into NJ to fill! Not paying NY prices!

Yes from my experience and that includes every car I've owned but one.

Never run out of diesel !!!!

Running out of diesel fuel is NOT a good idea !!! You most likely would not be able to restart your car, unless you bled the air from the fuel system.

Better to have a conservative MB fuel gauge, than an optimistic one !

I was reading up on that with diesels. Whether or not that is true with the new diesels (it was argued on diesel forum sites so I didn't feel like I learned if that was still true). Which is why I was thinking maybe the bluetec's fuel gauges/range are more conservative. Right now I have the low fuel warning and based on current experience that is about 3+gallons left.
I am use to running the tank pretty low. Maybe to 0.5gallons left on my SUV.
