Why replace entire mirror versus a bulb/LED

2011 E550 w/P2 (no Distronic). While dealer performed 40K service, I mentioned the drivers side lamp was out in the rearview mirror (interior). Passenger side works fine. It's covered under warranty, so why not save myself the cost of the bulb/LED this time. I've had the car three weeks and this is my first Merc. Curious how the warranty experience is since I'm covered for a few more years.

The light wasn't working when I picked it up, and the work order shows 41497 MIRROR ON ORDER. I will call my SA Monday to see why a new mirror is the fix. Before I do, makes sense to see what you guys think.

I have WIS, searched for an internal mirror bulb/LED replacement procedure, and did not find one. Surely the bulb/LEDs are a serviceable item versus the entire mirror? I seriously doubt something other than the lamp is shot, but maybe there is.

As a side note, thank you all for teaching me that prepaid maintenance is well worth it if a 40K interval is one of them. Gives me time to learn more about the car and WIS before I take a shot at maintaining it.

It's definitely serviceable, you can see the bulb housing in the following pic. Its the pyramid looking shape at the bottom of the housing. I was going to replace the bulb with an LED bulb when I fixed my mirror housing, but a quick glance around didn't show how to get to the bulb. Even at this state of disassembly.

Maybe in terms of warranty it's easier for the dealer to replace the entire mirror?

I think OP has issues with the map light that is inside the mirror located in the car not the outside puddle light.

The mirror has arrived and I spoke with the SA when I made the installation appointment. He did not know if the lamp itself was the issue, or if it was serviceable. SA committed to finding the answers..

Will post update after it is installed.

UPDATE: Interior rearview mirror replaced with what must be a later model version as garage door opener buttons in the middle versus more to the driver side. Indeed, Mercedes says it's not meant to be serviceable, therefore cheaper to replace under warranty. Price for just the mirror? $700. That extended warranty is looking like a good choice.

Surprised at that price that replace is best option. An other differences? For example, do you now have a button for compass on/off, calibration, etc? My 2011 does not have the button the manual describes. You have to use a paper clip if you want to adjust. And you can't trunk off the compass display.

Thanks for bringing that up; the one replaced did have the compass off/on button, and I now see a covered hole where that probably should be, and there looks like a different pinhole for the paper clip. That explains the comment 'almost finished, they are having trouble with the compass'. I'm OK with it b/c I like having the compass enabled. Might not like the reset procedure down the road, though. I Googled the part # 204-810-32-17-9051. It just shows Mercedes mirror. I'll see if it's in WIS when I get a chance.
