Loud noise when backing up?

Loud noise when backing up?
I bought this 2011 E350 used and have had it just over a month now. about 36000KM on it, very happy with it.
Anyway, I have noticed on 3 or 4 occasions when I back up the car it makes a loud "clunk" from the front. it is very noticeable but cannot replicate it. the times that it did occur was often after the car had been parked for about 8 hours (leaving for work in the morning or leaving work).
it is so load where I thought that I drove over something, two days ago it happened again and my family in the car said "what was that". I dropped of the car yesterday at the dealer but they could not replicate it.
it is different from the sound one gets after having washed the car (where the brakes are making some faint grinding noise) I think it maybe related to the foot brake but am not sure.
anybody experience something similar?

My 05 E has the same problem. I have pinned it down to a front-left ball bearing. I can it afford to replace it right now so I spread some white-lithium grease on it for the time being.
