In reality , the internal combustion engine is on a slow and drawn out obsolete journey itself. Like it or not, EV's are the future. I personally am happy/open/accepting of that because I for one can never settle for a 4 cylinder in my primary car. With EV's becoming more prevalent, in due time, we'll hopefully have the options of the remaining inherently "good" gas motors (V8's, I6's, basically ones that sound good, operate smoothly and have ideal power curves) or the far more sustainable EV's, which can really do it all (once they get range worked out, which they will).

The 3-cylinder and 4 cylinders will soon be ultimate compromises on all fronts. Crude operation, relatively harder to attain power-curve perfection, terrible sounding, etc.

I'd be shocked if the next E didn't come to the US as:

Turbo 4 Diesel
Turbo 4 Gas (replaces E350)
Turbo 6 Gas (replaces E550)

I think it will probably be

Turbo 4 Cylinder Gas & Diesel

Twin turbo 6 cylinder Gas & Diesel - with the Diesel being top of the line.

Given this would run counter to every other US diesel lineup from every other manufacturer, I doubt that this will be the case. But time will tell....

I figured they just got tired of hearing about all of the brake problems with the E550's.

Do you folks know if the E550 (Coupe and Convertible) will be discontinued as well?

Thanks,

I was in a dealer about a week ago and found out as they told me the E400 was only available as a hybrid and not a straight gas engine. So, this car doesn't seem to be a replacement for the E550.

That is true of MY 2014. E400 is Hybrid with a 3.5L V6 and electric motor.

For MY 2015, E400 is 3.0 Twin turbo V6. There may still be a E400 hybrid as well.
