Thinking of buying a 2010 E63... But I'm scared!

Hey Fellas,

I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on a 2010 E63 AMG Black on Black with the P2 Performance Package. This would be my first AMG and a big upgrade from my current 2011 GLK 350. The car has 15k miles, clean title, 1 owner. They are asking for $60k.

I'm just trying to do my due diligence as I believe the 2010 E63 was the first generation of the W212 AMG and I've heard of some horror stories with how expensive upkeep can be on an AMG. Is this a good purchase in your eyes? How will the car hold up over time? I'm happy that it's a very low mileage E63 for the 2010 year, but it only has 3 more months of factory warranty I believe, then I'm on my own I guess.

Thanks for all your input, it's appreciated. - Sammy

2014 E550-sold 😩
Do you need all that horsepower? Have you driven an E550? You can buy a 2010 E550 for about half of that cost. Buy an extended warranty. I have only had one AMG car. The happiest days were when I first got it and then when I traded it back in. Good Luck!

If you can get an extended warranty included from the dealer at that price, I say go for it. Low miles, and with the AMG cars there are so many extra's included that the non AMG cars don't have. Even though it's a 2010, that 6.2L NA engine was around years before, so I can't see any problems in the future with that and that thing sounds so good, better than the newer TT engines.

I agree.. coming from a GLK 350.. even a E350 will feel quick. I cant convince you what you should and shouldn't drive, nor do I know you financial status.. Al tho 15K miles is very low its still a 2010. I'd get a brand new car, E350 (550) for the same amount of $. Maybe even a 2012 E550 for around 40K

Not sure about the E63 but I know that the C63's go through tires every 9,000 miles. Having said that I would love to have one. I have a 2010 E550 that does zero to 60 in just under 5 seconds and E63's smoke my car.

I'm not an expert by any means regarding the price, Looking at the Indy dealer that I bought my merc from they have 2 2010 e63 P2 in stock granted miles are way more at 40, but they have them priced in the low 40s.

60k seems a bit much for me but I don't know how much they are going for retail wise..

here are the auction numbers, very small sample size so take them with a grain of salt, but do your due diligence regarding the price

2010 MB E63 AMG
I have exactly what you're looking for. Black on black 2010 E63 and the car is amazing, but so are the repair bills. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT purchase this without an extended warranty and without a little time remaining on the original 4yr/50K B2B warranty. You stated you have 3 months left so you at least have that covered. But make certain you shop around for an extended warranty. Feel free to PM for a referral on that as this can be a vexing decision when you start to study the details of the policy. And understand that repairs on this Beast can be Pricey. Downright nasty for that matter. And trying to go aftermarket to save a few bucks can at times be challenging. Just go through the motions to replace the front axle brakes as a simple exercise. Pads are plenty out there, but see what you find regarding rotors. This job at most MB shops will push upward of $2,200 just for parts alone. Even good Euro shops are right around the $2K mark out the door. Another thing often overlooked and forgotten at times until it's too late is the increase to your insurance policy. I had a 2008 Lexus LS460 just before this one and it increased $50 per month. If we're really looking at this from a BIG picture perspective, then also keep in mind that you're MPG's will also be less than your current GLK350. I drive Enthusiastically which leaves me with an average MPG of about 14/15. I drive this like it was meant to be driven. And another figure that you should keep in mind is the cost to replace tires. Being staggered will not allow you the ability to execute a traditional tire rotation, which tire experts have said can cut the manufacturers mileage warranty figures in half. This may be one of those topics where you talk to 3 different people you get 3 different responses. But it looks like I'll personally be right around the 20K with Conti DW's. So, these are just some of the things I feel one should considered when kicking around the idea of owning a Machine like this. All of these things can add up to much more than one may have anticipated. Having had a CLK55 AMG in the past I was prepared for an overall higher cost of ownership for this E63. But I'll admit, I was a little wide surprised at how much higher some of these figures did come back at. In my opinion, if you do your due diligence on this one, this will position this purchase to stand in the ranks with the best of them. Good luck...

I was pulling the AMG trigger and stopped for many of the reasons listed here (tires/MPG/maint (even if I choose to do my own brakes, etc.)). Insurance is a good one too--the 550 is already a few hundred more to insure than the Corvette b/c parts are so $$.

At first there was a little 'AMG regret' because the NA 6.2 is astonishing, but the NA 5.5 is conservatively tuned, with plenty of room to play. After researching, I went with an OE tune on the 550. It can never be the fully manual AMG, but the extra grunt and firmer shifting are well worth the reasonable cost--especially with a TPS reset to sharpen the response. When I get STAR then the 722.9 tranny adaptation can be reset as well. Not bad for a daily driver, and the Corvette will always be my cruise/event/track car.

Sometimes the car chooses you, and you will know that moment when it occurs. Good luck, and if the E63 ends up being your runner-up, then you're pretty blessed too.

Did you do an OE tune for 5.5 NA engine? How many hp did you gain ?
And is there a way to adjust tranny responsivness in STAR diagnostics?
Really interesting info ,Thank you

07 E63 06 CLK55 Cab 03 P-car C4S
I looked at a bunch recently and it should be closer to $45k.
If going to pay $60k, might as well get the later 6.3TT (better resale later also).
As for me, I've had very good luck with both my 02 E55 and 06 CLK55, and I'm hoping my recent 07 E63 will be equally reliable (vs my S55 or S600).
Good luck.

I did, and doubt I will ever put mine on the dyno to see the actual gain. OE's website suggests 25 HP gain and perhaps similar tq. I wanted the transmission tweaks more than anything, and it's definitely better-- resetting the TPS as well, it's more responsive, shifts faster, and holds gear longer. My understanding from OE is STAR is a diagnostic package only, and as such it is what you must use to reset learned adaptations in the 722.9 tranny (i.e. disregard threads you may read saying it can be done using the ignition key and mashing the accelerator).

I tune my Corvette with HP Tuners, and it was not difficult to learn how to adjust line pressure, shift times in milliseconds, and input the correct MPH per gear at redline RPM. It's like having a shift kit without the hardware. For the engine I made basic tweaks that added 30 rwhp w/o introducing knock, while picking up 10% improvement in fuel economy. The only adaptations are for short/long term fuel trims (closed loop fueling)

I'm hoping one day Windows/.NET based tuning software will exist for the W212, and when it does, I'll buy it and always be grateful to OE for getting me started.

I wouldn't say you can buy a 2010 CPO E550 for half that cost. The cheapest I found would be around $39k and CPO at around $42k.

Was it too pricy for that 25HP gain?

And I need to visit an indy shop to reset the tranny , because I did that ignition thing (and supposedly it got better) but still not how I wanted it to switch gears.. maybe that reset will help. Is there a section that I need to mention to a mechanic or they would probably know what im talking about.
Thanks a lot for your time and answering my question.

If you are paying that much you can probably get a 2014 E550 that is slightly used (i.e. 5K miles).

congrats OP, AMG is a serious fun time: make sure to get extended warranty, yes, upkeep can be a bit more with AMG cars, but it's worth the ticket price because there isn't anything like AMG ownership, the 2010's are nice too with the NA engine; great startup sound, miles sound good, but price is a bit high......def try to work them down.....

good luck

He never said it was a CPO car. I just paid $31K for my loaded E550 4Matic in January. P2, Pano roof, Drive dynamic heat/cool seats, parktronic, AMG wheels, etc. 43K miles. The deals are out there. I traded my E500 4Matic, but that price of $31K is without the trade. I bought my own extended warranty on top of the few months I still have left on the original.

I recently bought a 2011 E550 P2 (no accidents, regular MB maint.) with 50k miles for $32k plus taxes. While shopping for the 2010/2011 E550, I saw prices from $30k (more miles, minor accident, non-CPO) up to $43k (20k-40k miles CPO). Only saw one E63 and they wanted around $50k.

I think the value is quite good--the tune itself was $295, and the OE guys seem to have a good rep with the AMG community. There's only so much I'm going to do with a daily driver. One test I did was a 0-60 with Torque (Android app) and old fashioned stopwatch (for comparison). Before the tune 0-60 was 5.2 sec. After it was 5.0. Pretty nice for something weighing almost 4,400 pounds with me in it.

Gut feeling is the ignition switch/floor the accelerator for 5 seconds resets the TPS adaptation. As for our 722.9, going to the trouble of resetting adaptation buys some extra fun for a while, but eventually it will be where it was before. How much is that worth? Not sure yet.

There is a company called OE Tuning that does ECU tuning and performance chips.

I just sold my 2010 E63 the first of this month. It had 41k miles and I let it go for 42k even and that was the first serious buyer.

Ditto what he said. I paid $28K for my 2010 E550 4Matic in December with 54K miles. It also has P2, pano roof, dynamic seats, parktronic, AMG wheels, etc. with 1 year left on extended warranty. I could only find one small chip in the front bumper and one tiny surface scratch on the passenger seat. Otherwise in like new condition.
