2010 E350 4matic Transfer case leak
Ive recently joined this site but have used to for reference for years and even helped make my purchasing decision. I have been reading all over this site about the transfer case leaking in various models dating back to the 2005 eclass 4 matic. I have a 2010 e350 4matic 78,000 miles. Warranty expired. Car started making a weird humming noise and took it to my Indy shop. They said the transfer case was leaking oil and needs to be replaced, if not eventually I will need a new transmission. Quoted me $3600. Does anyone know how long can I drive like this ? Or if MB will own up to the fact that the part is faulty and help me out? I read that in one such instance. Where do I go from here?

I can't help with your specific questions. However, I can say that others have it a lot worse. On the C Class, the Transfer Case is actually part of the transmission. No way to service xcase on those, have to replace entire transmission for $7k.
I'd probably get it fixed if you trust the shop.
It is interesting that MB doesn't warranty the powertrain longer than the B2B 4/50 warranty. Many reputable manufacturers do.

2014 E63S; AMS 100 octane ecu tune; edok tcu tune; BB intakes; dyno tuned
For something that expensive you should get a couple more quotes including the Benz dealership
Good luck

The Canadian EW version most definitely covers the transmission and transfer case for an additional 3 years beyond the normal 4 year factory warranty or up to 160,000 km, whichever occurs first.

Hmmm ? Perhaps the terms on Mercedes Extended Warranty in the USA are different from the equivalent EW in Canada ?

In the U.S., some companies like Acura, Infiniti, Lexus, and Caddy have basic warranties like 4/50 B2B then 7/70 for drivetrain (engine/trans). If Mercedes was confident enough in their powertrains, maybe they would offer a longer warranty like Lexus?
Of course....the cars are way different...

I had this problem corrected last year, fortunately under the original warranty at approximately 24K. The leak was found during a service clinic the dealer runs in Spring & Fall where you can accompany your car and a Technician into the shop to inspect your car and get your questions answered. It is a great selling tool for the dealer and most appreciated by anyone interested in their car. A catered lunch is included.
Here is what they did to repair it if it is of any help or even the same problem you have.
Transfer case leak. Intermediate housing at transfer case disassembled, mating surfaces resealed, fluid level corrected. Screw, nut, sealant, cleaners and gear oil used. Procedure required removal of panels under the engine.
As it was warranty work I have no idea what it could have cost.
The MB warranty is 4 years 50K as far as I know. No included extensions for the drive train as part of the original warranty.
