service timing
I am about to go on a 2,000 mile trip in 3 weeks. At that time, my E350 will be 1000 miles away from its 40k mile service. Should I do the service about 1k prior or 1k late? I don't know how conservative the MB service is regarding oil changes.
Thanks.

I'd do it early if you have time but wouldn't worry too much if there are no ongoing issues to be looked at. If waiting until after your trip, I would at least check tire pressure, coolant and oil levels before going. Have a nice trip!
MB is fairly conservative with 10K mi between oil changes. My BMW had "free" service, which also explained why the onboard service system used a ~15 mi oil change interval. I always felt that was pushing it.

I'd ask SA advice on this. He'll say, "That's OK, bring it in at ~41,000." Then document the discussion just in case the engine swallows a rod at 40,100 miles.

Another vote for doing it early -- you can never change the oil engine too often. You definitely can change it too late. Had to clean out sludge from the GF's VW Passat engine after the previous owner hadn't been taking care of it. Nasty job. Not cheap either.
