Hello, just got a used 2011 e350 and I have not used it much. It seems like maps never been updated and very old.
What is your opinion about cars Navigation system and maps ?
I like to use Google maps on my iPhone and does not want to maintain two address and contact database. Do you really use cars Nav system and maps very often or end using your phone more.
It also seems expensive to update the maps.
Any ideas and opinions appreciated
Happy New Year to everybody
Thanks

If the data does not have a POI that I want to go to I call TeleAid and they beam it down to my car. The other option for me is to use the phone and find the address and then enter it in the car system. If my car was just one year younger I could send the address to my car. I think I could make my car use Mbrace that has this function but I don't think it is worth the trouble as TeleAid has been able to beam it down every time so far.
I think the Navi system in the car is very good and a lot better than looking at a small phone display. Also with POIs in the system you can easily call like a hotel, which with a phone is not that simple and creates a safety hazard doing it.

I do not like Apple map on iPhone that is why I use Google map app it is the best Nav system. Google map app has Voice search option and much accurate than Siri. Yes voice directions play through the system . I think I found the best option for me. I use iPhone 6 plus so the screen is perfect for Nav

MB GPS Systems
After driving MB models before there was such a thing as GPS, I can honestly say each and every GPS system on every MB I ever had was pure crap. I had a 2005 S600 and after putting out that kind of money for what was a very luxurious car I had to laugh when they told me if I wanted to update my GPS I had to plunk down around $200 (at that time) to update my system after the first year, and for a system that wasn't even as good as the Garmin system I had in another car. I read that MB is now using Garmin for their GPS systems, after using Garmin systems over the years I can tell you they're light years ahead of whomever was making the MB GPS systems prior to Garmin, so I expect at least on the E class cars from 2015 on the GPS systems should get better.

Does anyone know how to get the navi to show future guidance? On my Porsche and my Leaf the right side of the screen (unlike MBZ that has the option just to show every freeway exit) has the next commands and their distance. (i.e. 1.7 miles exit 8a, 2.5 miles right on Wilshire, 3.5 miles left on beverly). ?

A word of caution on eBay offerings of Map updates discs.
I had a guy offer one but when I asked if I could return it he got kind of flaky.
A couple of guys in the club with W212s agreed we would buy the disc, share the cost and update 3 cars.
I did mine but when we went to do the second car the Comand refused to see it.
That makes me wonder if the code is written to restrict them to 1 time use.
Anybody know for sure? If they are not and it was something in his car I have one to sell.

iPhone is light years ahead of the 2011 Nav system.
Garmin and DB announced in April 2013 that Garmin would be supplying future Mercedes cars but I don't know the status of that announcement.

I have never used mobile phone navigation so I can't comment. I am under impression that small screen and requirement to have internet connection make it useless. MB navigation system is really good, I never miss destination and directions and estimates are very reliable. MB is lacking in good POI, so I guess phone or just internet will be great help.

The usefulness of the GPS might be dependent on where you live. I know that it useless for me in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. It gives me some crazy directions to God knows where. The other day I was at an intersection where I knew I had to turn left and the GPS told me to go straight, then make a u-turn, followed by a right. WTF?
It might also be different for the model year. This is in a 2014.

These wrong turn instructions like you explain are most likely due to not updated map data. I know one intersection where the navi instructions are to go straight and after U-turn to turn right just like you explain and i know in the past left turn was not allowed in this intersection. You had to go straight and make a U-turn and then turn right. They have built a left turn lane and now it is all different with left turn allowed but my navi still tells to go straight and do the U like it used to be.

And let's not forget that government agencies provide the data used to make these maps --- garbage in . . . garbage out.
After all, governments have been known to make a rare mistake now and then . . . or much more often.

Mercedes Benz e450 Wagon / Porsche 911 Cabriolet
Hate to resuscitate an old thread, but can you further explain this to me? Do you go into the Mbrace app and then search from there in order to send2benz? Or, (and this would be awesome if so) do you go into the Google Maps app on your device and send to car directly from the google app?
Thanks in advance.
UPDATE: well, I finally stumbled upon another thread and think I figure it out. On the smartphone, one needs the mBrace app in order to send addresses to the car's navigation; it cannot be done from within Google Maps app. Alternatively, one can go to the mBrace web site on their computer and also submit addresses from there. Lastly, for those that have mBrace AND Mercedes apps, a google search aka google maps search can be done via the COMAND interface and then submitted to navigation. Sadly, I found the data connection to be so slow that searches via mobile would be so much quicker. Anyway, sorry to have chimed in on a slightly older thread but just wanted to answer my own question in case anyone else stumbled here also.
Thanks in advance.
