How "tall" of a tire can I put on a 19" wheel?

I'm currently running 20" wheels (pictured) but the rubber band size tire is making me feel way uncomfortable.....I've already bent the rim once and it's only been 5 months with them mounted.

18 inch wheels hardly have the options in style, compared to say 19" or 20"....and they of course look better.....everything I've read says to run a 35 series tire. With a 19", which is a little "thicker" but I'm gunshy. Just might not have the nuts anymore, cruising down the street feeling like my wheels could get bent at any moment.

Current front wheel setup, 245/30:

I've got 260/30/19 running in the rear and 235/35/19 in the front. I always wondered and questioned why I simply can't run a 35profile in the rear to match the front. Running on 30 really doesn't provide me with much confidence at all, especially here in San Francisco.

Most tire shops won't let you test fit different size tires, that would consider their tires used. All they can do is recommend. You have to commit to the specific tires you choose before they mount.

^^^ This is very true. You can't just "test" tires to see if they fit properly. Once they are mounted they are yours.

If you would have 260 x 35 - 19 tires in the rear they would be about 22 mm (~7/8") bigger in diameter than the original 265 x 35 - 18 tires. This would put your speed reading off by about 3.4%, i.e. when your speed reading would be 70 mph your actual speed would be 72.4 mph.

Your current 260 x 30 - 19 tires are 4.1 mm smaller than the original 265 x 35 - 18 so your seep by the meter at 70 mph results actual speed at about 69.6 mph. This is very small error.

Tire width with 35 rubber "thickness" on 19" wheel that would match the original tire for speed would be only about 230. You could use 235 x 35 - 19, which would be just 4.4 mm bigger than the original tire and result only about 0.6% speed measurement error.

But, with all these you would loose the staggered setup. The 30 vs. 35 profile height allows you for the staggered setup.
