Torque Converter
I have read the posts re transmission/transfer case issues with the 7G transmission in 4 matics but there doesn't seem to be much re torque converter issues except some comments about the drain plug.
My reason for asking about this is my 2011 E350 4 matic wagon developed and growl last weekend which was not traceable to any thing in the transmission or transfer case. To quote my tech after servicing the transmission it was "one of the cleanest I have seen in a 20 yr career". The fluid was clear and the magnets clean. I cut open the filter and there was nothing odd in it.
The growl could be heard when the brakes were applied and up to the point I considered to be TC lock up.
After a week it mysteriously disappeared.
Any and all comments would be appreciated.

If it was a solenoid issue with the TC (in/out lock-up) it would typically not be a growl, the car could stall or be very lethargic since the converter would be stuck in lock-out. Also, that lock-out is fairly dynamic, meaning it disengages at almost any throttle input.
The noise could be from the pads, sometimes they get a bit of a build-up.

When you say pads what are you referring to? Surely not brake pads?
What puzzles me is that it went away as quickly as it came on.

You misunderstood.
When I referred to the brakes I meant when I locked the brakes down hard and then applied power I could hear it but the car never moved forward. A bit of upward movement but no forward movement.
I am not talking about this occurring with the car moving AND the brakes applied.
Once the car moves without the brakes I heard it until it seemed to shift into 4th at which time it disappeared. Hence the question of whether this could be TC lock up related.
In all 7 of my MB cars over nearly 30 yr. in the ice, snow and salt of winters I have never had dirt affect brakes. In fact I have never had caliper seize or movement of the pads affected by dirt which is amazing when you think about how much dust comes off MB pads.
