Hackability

After watching 60 Minutes last night and reading today's news I wondered if anyone had done any research into how vulnerable the W212 is to hackers and in particular the issues that DARPA demonstrated so well to 60 Minutes.

It was interesting but I must admit that I'm not concerned about that type of hack now unless there is some evidence it's being done, and on some widespread level.

Of the various things I have to worry about in life, someone taking control of my car is awfully low on the list. Even among car-related worries, it should fall much further behind how (un)safely we're all driving.

Yup! Agree. I was just curious if MB was one of the companies that have addressed the issue.
Of course, when a show such as this is aired, it can trigger the crazies to rise to the challenge.
Until there is evidence of an significant increase in activity I will find other things to keep me awake at night.

I don't know about anyone else, but I would like to know the answer before the issue becomes "widespread" or shows a "significant increase." Having said that, I am not going to lose sleep over the possibility.

I believe that any computer with remote access today (e.g. MB E-class, etc) is capable of being hacked.

Noka, would you think that a 2011 with no connection to Teleaid, no internet capabiity on board would be better than say a 2014?

The report I saw showed the "hacker" plugging in a cable to the ODBC before he could "hack" the car.
* Wireless access? Nah.
* Like hacking a Verizon cell phone wirelessly. Not widespread, nor practical.

I'm not losing sleep over this ...

Sure, unless someone is close enough with a Bluetooth connection

Maybe so, I didn't see the beginning which might have showed the hardwire entry point. However, if MB can access some cars remotely and you can via a SmartPhone app, I would not think it impossible for a clever hacker to get deeper into a car's brain someday. I seriously doubt MB has (yet) put any thought into hack prevention. Again, I'm not losing sleep either.
