STEERING wheel noises
This morning, I started my 2011 E550 (automatic transmission), placed it in reverse and started to steer to get it out of the garage. At that moment I heard clicking and rubbing noises INSIDE the steering wheel, actually most probably inside the closed area behind the wheel itself, where all the gearshift, signal, cruise control levers are installed. Those noises where following my steering movements.
I immediately though that the steering lock may not be fully disengaged and feared that it may even lock while driving (scary scenario). I pulled the car out of the garage on the driveway and by moving it in drive and reverse a few times I was steering left-right continuously. After a while the clicking and rubbing noises started to gradually diminish and eventually disappeared.
As I see that the W212 with automatic transmission does not have a steering lock (see GregTR's pdf's in https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...ing-wheel.html) I wonder if anyone may have any idea what the problem may be. I'm thinking some part got loose inside that area; however as it was able to rub against the steering column I'm afraid it may be in danger to block it at some point.
