Replacing Rear Set of Tires only OK...?

I know it's optimal to replace all 4 tires with the same brand at the same time.

But let's say that after lots of "spirited" driving, my slightly wider sized rears are wearing out twice as fast as my fronts.

Would it be OK / Safe to just replace the 2 rear tires only?

It should be okay - unless you have AWD then you ought to replace all of the tires at the same time.

Yes
I do this all the time
My E550 eats rear tires every 18-20k
Just be sure to use same brand and tire model to maintain handling.

So long as you replace them in pairs when they wear down, you will be fine. Since you have the staggered setup they will always be on the same axle which is what you want. Some people think that they can ride on 1 or 2 nearly bald tires becuase there is plenty of tread on the others ones.

Common wear pattern for staggered. I agree with blackbuilt ... " use same brand and tire model".
