Absolutely!
The right model would be a used Toyota Camry. Having the resources to buy a 16 year old a luxury first car does not make it a wise decision. You need to think about the expectations you are instituting in the Grandson and the reactions of his peers. I have eight of them and hope I can resist that temptation.
Are you trying to get him the best car you can for HIM or assuage your conscience about something? Or try to get him to like you more?
Sorry, but you asked.

I think the OP is pretty set on getting an MB for this new driver. While other may not do the same, I respect his choice - it's his money after all.

Its like thefish says I have the money and I cannot take it with me. Not trying to buy the child or make him love me. He is a great kid that is well mannered and he is doing great in school. Just wanted him to have the best as long as I can provide it. I have been teaching him to drive on my e350 and he really likes the car so why not get him something close to what he is used to driving.

I can understand that! My Dad taught me to drive on a '59 VW bug with a 100,000 miles on it. Being sixteen, it had wheels and a motor and I loved it. Since I was used to it, he gave that to me instead of his new T-Bird.

Are you going to get him a new car or a used one? There's one theory that says to just get a used car for a new driver as the odds they'll smash it up is high and you mind as well do that to a used car. On the other hand, I think the 2014 and up had collision prevention assist and you could also get the driver assistance package which would include lane keeping assist and blind spot assist which may be helpful to a first time driver.

The C300 is nice too, the newer refresh has taillights that look like the S550 at first glance til you get closer and see it's smaller. C class and E class also have options available on them that aren't there on the CLA.

If you're going to pay all the payments for him etc. than start with the C300 and modify it to your and his liking. That is a great gift and I'm sure he'll love whatever you get him.
