Brake pad thickness question....
Background:
Purchased my car CPO with 20,000 miles on it in Feb 2012.
It now has 80,000 miles, and has never had brakes done by me. Hard to believe that they were done at the CPO service at 20K.
Just got back from the dealer for the 80K service, they say the pads are 9mm front and 7mm rear, and that they start out at 10mm.
Questions:
1. Wow, how long do brake pads last?
2. Is the 10mm number correct?
Yes, it is a lot of highway driving, but still. To be at 80% new with this mileage?
Not complaining, just wondering.

The original pads on the front of my Hyundai Genesis 4.6 V8 lasted to 130,000 miles. I have 166,000 on the Genesis now and still have the original rear pads. My E500 pads usually last about 70,000 miles. My E63 doesn't count because of the way I drive it.

When it's ready for replacement command will pop up a warning message that the pads need changing.
That's what happened in mine.

The pads can last unbelievable mileage with mostly highway driving. I used to have a Chevy Tahoe and when I traded it in it had 114000 miles on it. The brake pads looked like brand new and this is a heavy vehicle.
Highway driving is so different from city driving. I used to change my oil at every 3000 miles. The Tahoe had an oil life indicator and every time I changed oil it said over 70% oil life left. The highest was 82%.
But I still changed the oil at 3000 miles...
For the brake pads the difference is even much bigger compared between city and highway driving. On highway the engine runs at all times but the brakes see very little use. With highway driving the pads probably last well over 200 000 miles.

I agree, however, I owned an Acura that was driven in the same way by the same person with mostly highway miles like the Hyundai and the
Acura needed front brake pads about every 40,000 miles. So it also depends on the quality and engineering of the brake system on a vehicle. I will not own another Acura, besides the poor brake life I had numerous problems.
