I'm calling BS on that too, I've driven them both several times. Is the one you drove the one that had the crappy airmatic you mentioned? Perhaps that one was a beater?
I get it, every v8 E class up to the exact year you bought ( for the lowest price in the country) is crap.
P1, um no thanks!!

Disclosures:
* I own a 2012 TT 4.7L E550.
* I haven't driven the earlier NA 5.5L E550.
The W212 TT 4.7L E550 is rated at 402hp/443tq. Max torque is achieved at 1.6K or 1.8K rpm. I won't get into the conspiracy theories that the M278 powerplant is under-rated. If I recall correctly, Merc publishes a ~5sec 0-60 time. C&D tested a 2012 at 4.3s and a 2014 at 4.5s 0-60 time. "With the aid of now standard all-wheel drive, the additional power is enough to shave at least 0.5 second off a 2010 E550’s 0-to-60-mph and quarter-mile times..." reports C&D.

The earlier W212 NA 5.5L E550 is rated at 382hp/391tq. Max torque is achieved at 2.8-4.8K rpm. Edmunds, who's notoriously slower than others in my experience, recorded a 5.3s run to 60.

I get it, it's more powerful, don't believe anyone here is disputing that fact? Real world puts the NA 550 at 4.8sec to 60 and 1/4 mile 13.4sec at 105mph. yup, that's 1/2 sec slower to 60 than the TT
I do like your choice or earlier vs. old. Lol

Johnny, not fair to use C&D for one 0-60 time and Edmunds( barf ) for the other. 4.8sec for the N/A is correct. These are sub 5 sec sedans for crying out loud. They are both rockets. As I said earlier, if you want to build more power the TT is the way to go.

I hear you, Edmunds is as slow as Consumer Reports ... but, I called that out.
My post was to support the comment that the NA 550 will see nothing but the tail lights of the TT 550. The torque advantage down low ensures it. I find it hard to believe some are giving the poster a hard time for inferring it.
Yes, they're both nice cars.
Yes, they're both modestly fast sedans.
Yes, the newer one is faster than the outgoing one.
Yes, that usually happens. It won't be long before the TT 550 is trumped.
I hope that I can be impartial when that happens.

Regarding differences between the model years: I have a 2012 E550 with the M278 TwinTurbo Engine. In Summer 2013 my car got the new secondary drive chain tensioners. This was part of a recall (details can be found in this forum also). This summer, my car had problems with cold start noise. The origin of this noise could not be located by Mercedes at the beginning. As part of the search process, Mercedes engineering headquarter in Stuttgart ordered my dealership to replace those tensioners again, as these parts had been revised several times since 2013! This is also true for the variable camshaft. They also made my dealer to replace those (which was a hell of a job).
So yes, there are mechanically serve differences between the model years!

Impartial . We've continued to say it's faster (esp tuned...look at Tony). Did you miss that? We may see your tail lights, but we'll be right on your a$$, and if there are corners involved that gap will close very quickly. You'll have to try an airmatic v8 W212 some time. I clocked 50k in a non airmatic w212...big difference, but the TT is faster for sure....
Jon was crapping all over every previous v8 E. W211 dated, shi((y head lights. e63 high maint. cost, NA E slow as Shi) crappy airmatic (having driven one) but a P1 TT 2012, well that's nirvana. I also don't believe he was even shopping an E63 at a 25k budget....just chirping. He likes his car, but a lil over the top...that is all

They are all great cars and we are all fortunate to have them in the stable. Especially, with the current gas prices! Woot!
