If you go to the Mercedes site in Germany you can build the current 212 without navigation and even without Comand. The entry level 'radio' they have is called 'Audio 20 CD'.

Did they just offer them in the US without nav, or actually sell any? I have to imagine no dealer would want that on his lot, so a lack of P1 would be special order only.

They actually had some without the P1 package when they first started selling them. I even know a guy that leased one of them. It was the cheapest, basic e-class available.

That's funny. I guess if someone wants a rare bird, there it is. I bet the resale hit was a lot more than the cost of P1.
Back in 09, I was in Germany and rented a new 212 E200 CDI with cloth interior and a modest option group - it had a small screen COMAND.

I love the number of engines you can choose from over there. I was out there in 2011 and rented a CLS 320 CDI (I think it was a 320.....definitely the 6 cylinder turbo diesel). Diesels are great - so much torque in the lower RPM's.

There are usually around a dozen different E powertrain configurations (and a zillion more model and option/trim configurations) I think - the manual is still available, too.
I was there last month and was offered a not apparently highly optioned CLS 220 (yes, 4cyl) CDI as my rental. I asked about alternatives, as I reserved and prepaid a 6cyl class. I ended up in a highly optioned X5, which wasn't all bad as I like HUD and I wanted to try something different from MB on the trip.

Car fobs are getting too big. It is impossible to carry fobs around for 2 or more cars now. In fact, the new MB fob is really too big IMO.
As for all the engine and transmission offerings, that may be one of DAG's problems with the high cost of maintaining an MB, as well as purchasing one. All the R&D, manufacturing, warranty work, etc. for a vast array adds to the cost. Not to mention stockpiling all the parts for decades.
Incidentally, in 2009 I purchased the P1 package to get the audio options, not the navigation.
