Trans shudder and thump

2012 e350 4matic 54K miles. At highway speeds under light acceleration transmission shudders with audible thumping noise as if torque converter lock up coming in and out in succession or possible transfer case issue? Under harder acceleration as in requiring shift from 7 to 6 shift no shudder or thumping. Otherwise shifts and runs fine. Issue is getting progressivly worse so took first MB service avaiiable in 2 days. Any suggestion or anyone with similar issue?

The 7 speed transmission has a known issue with hard shifts on certain gears which seems like a poorly rev matched gear shift. Can you localize your problem to a particular gear change? This is fairly common issue being talked about here and not restricted to a few cars. There are several threads with similar issues in this forum, some are fixed by a software reset, very few have a hardware issue needing expensive fixes, mostly there is no easy fix. If you talk to your dealer he may do a software reset.
Mine has a very minor poor rev matching at 4-5 gear shift at times but that's about it. I tend to ignore it.
But don't let a minor issue eat into your enjoyment of this awesome car. Let us know how things go. Good luck.

Thanks, no hard shifts of any kind at any time, actual gear changes are very smooth. Again under mild accleration like the kind to maintain highway speed when encountering a grade but not quite requiring a gear change to a lower gear does the problem occur. Again to me it feels like the TC lock up bouncing on and off in quick succession or perhaps something in the transfer case exhibiting excess slack/ slop like a bushing going bad. If I pedal mash at that point the trans drops a gear two and away I go without shudder. Fact is I dont really understand how the mechanics of this car actually works but I know what the condition feels like compared to the type of vehicles I used to work on. I will keep you advised.

look into replacing the tcc solenoid in the valve body. many c32 guys observed this same problem which was fixed by replacing the tcc.

I've noticed the problem a bit in my 2013E350, downshift mainly between 4->3 or 5->4 I think, e.g. when getting off the freeway and on the ramps; a dealer reset kind of made it go away - not as frequent anymore.

Dealer replaced torque converter, after 9 visits, and after 1000 miles seems to have fixed the issue

For me the software update by the dealer did it. It drives fine now.

Lately I've been sensing slight shuddering when making tight turns coming from the rear wheels. I have '15 E350 4Matic.
is this transmission or the rear differential?

Oh ok, from what i see looks like rear differential needs oil change and that fixes it. But not sure, if you find out what it is can you let me know, thanks
