Differential fluid change

The service sheet for the '11 212 E has and entry for "Rear axle differential fluid replacement CODE 471 (manual locking differential) every 40K miles. Anyone know what that is? Special option available in certain countries?

According to the MB Recommended Maintenance Manual
https://www.mbusa.com/vcm/MB/Digital...nce_Manual.pdf

it only calls for replacing the differential fluid for the AMG models at 40,000 miles. In fact I couldn't find anywhere else that it recommends rear differential fluid replacement on a non AMG. The only reason the AMGs models need it is for the friction modifiers in the fluids required for the limited slip diff they have.

I have a 2012 and just had my 50,000 mile service A. They were recommending rear differential fluid service but I turned it down as it isn't recommended according to the official MB Maintenance Manual.

I can't recall any car I've ever had that recommended differential service before 100,000. I don't image that MB is putting in fluids that are inferior to the BMWs, Jeep and Chevy Pickups that I have replace it in before

Replace rear axle differential fluid
(only C 63 AMG with limited slip
differential, CLS 63 AMG,
E 63 AMG and SL 63 AMG with
AMG Performance Package)

Agree, I wouldn't worry about it. Unless you are very aggressive driver just killing the car on the turns and stuff.

I replaced the oil on my '98 c230 when I got it a few years ago, its basically just a 90w oil. My car was about 14 years old at the time and I did it just because. It's not that hard a job to do, but I can't imagine needing it done on a 4 year old car with that few miles. I would have the tranny fluid serviced at 40K, that is just good preventative maintenance.

Anyone know what the "manual locking differential" or the "code 471" is? I agree differential fluid replacement isn't normally called out and I'm not worried about it.....just wonder what they're referencing.

Mechanical locking or "limited slip" differential, as mentioned AMG only.

OK...."mechanical locking" makes sense. The service sheet I have clearly states "manual locking" and I thought it was some kind of off road feature for the E
