Exclamation Bad transmission problem

It is quite expensive to buy a brand new mercedes benz where I live(I live in Nigeria to be precise), so i decided to opt for a fairly used one. I got a 2010 E350 4matic. After a couple of weeks, the car started giving a transmission problem, gear shifts roughly from R(reverse) and D(DRIVE) into P(Park) on its own while still in motion. This can be pretty scary sometimes!! I had a benz technician take a look at the problem with a Star diagnostic kit, then we realised the ISM is malfunctioning. In this situation, Can only a ISM be replaced ? what are my options? I do not know how to go about solving this problem. A little help will be appreciated

Bring car in to have them reset the transmission and the problem may go away for a while

I would start with a fluid and filter change (not flush) and as stated above a transmission software reset.

Thank you very much for the advise. Technicians are not very reliable is. Is resetting the transmission thesame as clearing error codes ? My benz workshop brought in another free-lance technician who tried to clear some codes with a STAR DIAGNOSTIC KIT. I dont know if it is thesame thing as doing a transmission software reset.
On some days the car runs perfectly without the problem mentioned.

If tech pulled/cleared fault codes that confirmed ISM was malfunctioning using MB diagnostic equipment (DAS) and problem reoccurred with same fault codes I would think ISM needs replacement as shown in links above (post 2).

Not to confuse the issue but I would also like to mention MB bulletin LI54.25-P-056472 released 2/2014 - key is not recognized in the electronic ignition switch, the vehicle cannot be started and/or the automatic transmission may perform an "Automatic P function" at speeds below 6 km/h.”, replace electronic ignition switch due to assembly issue” - 212 clean point (problem corrected) as of VIN A776831. If VIN is below A776831 request MB goodwill replacement due to defective EIS installed at production.

Have no idea except that every time I bring the car in to have trans reset it works perfectly for a couple of weeks then it goes back to its old routine.

I will have the Tech clear the fault codes again. It is thesame thing as resetting the transmission system ? Any idea how much a ISM cost ?

This is helpful. I will ask the Tech if a reset can be done.

Did your Tech/dealer ever advised you to have the ISM changed ?

I already mentioned the fault codes read as ISM malfunctioned. On some days it runs smoothly without any issues. Could this also be due to electronic ignition switch due to assembly issue like you mentioned ?

Did you read the responses by konigstiger? He is one of the most knowledgable and helpful persons in this forum.
Yes you can do software resets to help you out temporarily, but if the equipment is faulty it needs to be replaced. Don't skirt around the problem. Address it decisively and you will be pleased with the outcome.

I finally had the ISM replaced. Error code was cleared but car still roughshift into park sometimes. What could be the likely cause. Is it possible the problem have affected my gearbox system overtime?

I'm having this same issue with my 2012 e350 4matic

I made the appointment in my nearest MB dealership to get the problem resolved, but I'm worried it's going to be very pricey sense I'm out of warrantee. Do you think I'll get covered with the good will replacement?
