Phew!

Are the VIN-tied manufacturer records so strong that this is reliable? How would I know if a bad airbag were slipped into my car but not registered as the actual component used?

That's what the government uses to notify the manufacturer/you of a recall.

Um....you wouldn't. But what other source of data would there be?

Well manufacturers are supposed to keep records of all that. But you likely wouldn't find out for sure until after you're killed by your airbag.

It is the Takata airbag inflators that is the root cause and Mercedes has already determine that over 711,000 vehicles have this Takata airbag inflators.

As of right now, my car still does not show up under safercar.gov. Nor have I been contacted by MBUSA.

I am trying to sell my car. I got an offer from Carmax for it last night. One of my local MB dealers (MB Tysons Corner, VA) advertises they will buy your car from you like carmax, I tried to take them up on that, but because my e350 is part of the recall they wouldn't touch it. They said they weren't allowed to resell it and that they would have to hold on to it for at least 8 months. Soooo, I am left selling it to carmax which I assume probably also has a similar policy, however they will probably just wholesale it out to another dealer.

So while MB insists the car is safe to drive, they refuse to sell cars that are part of the recall.

that's like millions and millions of cars though, that's like saying they're gonna put a halt to all used car sales

"Approximately 34 million vehicles are potentially affected in the United States, and another 7 million have been recalled worldwide."

Yup its all a big mess.
I guess the manufacturers are trying to pass off liability when they can to the dealers. So if the dealers take in on trade a good resellable vehicle that is part of the recall they will just wholesale them or sell them at auction to one of those little dealers.
At least with my e46 I get a free rental.

Huge mess. There's no legal reason I'm aware of to selling a car with a known defect if you identify it to the buyer. They have tracked values and on those with an outstanding airbag recall the values are considerably lower. Luckily mine isn't on the list as I'll be trading it in September. But my wife's BMW is ready to be replaced and it's on the list and she needs a more compliant suspension than BMWs so will probably take a hit.

I think those little small no brand name dealers will sell the cars. The larger brand name dealers will not for liability reasons.
