Pre Safe Inoperative help needed!!!

so i JUST PURCHASED an E350 no more than 3 weeks ago and while driving a "pre safe inoperative see operators manual" message pops up on the dash. The steering gets tight and the abs, brake and traction lights all come on.

I can't think of anything that would be setting whatever this is off.

CAN SOMEONE OFFER SOME HELP???

If you search, you'll find a lot of people with the same problem. I had my 2014 E350 in 3 separate times for service. The first time, they repositioned the sensor in the bumber, the second time, they replaced with whole pre-safe unit and the third time, they replaced a pin in the accelerator. The third fix seems to have corrected it.

Call for service and have them scan for the error codes that are causing the problem.

this is what i see on my cluster. I would like to remind you that the car is currently in motion and the speedometer says 0mph. If anyone can narrow this down for me i'd appreciate any help that I can get.

Sorry, but this is a job for the dealership.

I have the exact same issue!! Did they ever resolve the problem for you? What was the culprit?

(my fingers are crossed hard)

I have sat here with the Star computer for the past 2 hours, charged the battery, cleared faults, (nothing that really seemed relevant by more than happenstance) and tried to test drive. the ESC warning is the only one that now comes on but there are no fault codes. I now have some rear decklid not configured fault nothing else is showing up as active..... I'm thoroughly confused...

EDIT: I cleared the previous ESP communication saved/not current fault with an Autel computer. All dash lights are out and the car drove home fine. I really don't like when an issue goes away and I have no idea what the cause was. I had something similar pop up last year but never resolved it and it went away on its own. It was similar symptoms but would occur when cornering and the car would basically reset some electrical systems the same warnings would come on, than disappear a few seconds later once going straight... I do also feel the issues arise when there are weather changes or recent precipitation.

For all I know, I simply was in the shop long enough tonight (5 hours give or take) for whatever moisture was left in the system from yesterdays rain to dry up and just cease for the moment...

I'm hoping to hear what resolution people here found on the issue. It is much to similar to not have a likely similar cause.

Maybe you have some connectors loose somewhere, and when you go around a curve something rubs against it to pull on it a little so they lose connection momentarily until you straighten out?

I believe that or a cracked/corroded harness or connector is the most likely culprit. I'm hoping to figure it out soon. There is entirely to many electrical lines in these cars to try narrowing down without a viable code to at least point in the right direction. Needle in a haystack doesn't even begin to describe what checking for continuity and such would entail....

this was fixed by the dealership for free. i never knew what the issue was but i think i was told it was something to do by a harness by the back wheel. I had just purchased the car so it was free for me.

Thank you for the response. If you ever end up in service please ask them. Problem went away again, for now.... Lot's of threads on this problem but no one has posted the solution (which I assume most achieved). I'm happy yours got sorted!!

I have the same light. It came on first time last night not long after car started up Call SA at dealer this morning and he said car was not dangerous to drive and to drop off next Wednesday as soonest they will have a loaner car. Took car out today and drove about 15 miles with no issue. When I came out and started car again "pre safe inoperative" light came on again. No other error messages have appeared. This really seems to be a mystery. Am I really safe driving? Thanks.

You are safe to drive it but you will not have warning or assistance in braking if this would be necessary. You are the captain (as always) but have to do all the work in emergency situations (depend on your driving quality) as the pre safe is to alarm and help you brake when the car calculates you are in danger to hit someone in front of you..

I believe this popped back up and cleaning the wheel speed/abs sensor resolved it largely. I also cleaned the connectors the sensor tied into at the top of the wheel well.

I took my car in last week on Wednesday. On Thursday they told me it was a faulty driver side seatbelt. It was ordered and arrived Friday and I picked up my car on Saturday, Hopefully will not show up again! Thanks.

FWIW, I had a similar issue with my 2015 E350 and the dealership replaced the main & aux batteries, and the issue resolved.

My 2014 just threw this mssg a couple of months ago. Dealer had to end up replacing some ECU to fix it. It's still under a CPO warranty till December ...I hope I don't have any more of these issues!

I just had the issue in my 2014. They had to reposition a sensor. I think it was knocked out of position when I had a wheel resurfaced.
Problem solved for me. Cost $130 at an independent MB mechanic.

My 2016 kept throwing this thru 2 weeks ago. Dealership even kept it for a week once. First time they replaced a seat belt module. That was pre-covid, not much driving for many months until recently again. Pre-SAFE message popped up again. Dealer replaced other front seat belt module (I believe both dirver's and passenger's seat belt modules have been replaced not). We shall see if this did indeed solve the problem. I've also had a message about the radar sensor being dirty and to clean come on 2x over the past 3000 mile. Still need to look into that considering the comment about radar sensor earlier in this thread...

I had the radar sensor dirty message recently and the dealer did a software update on mine.. the SA said the software was specifically related to this feature.
