Diesel engine oil - color after 5,000?

Newbie to diesels. According to the computer, 5,800 till the next B service.

What should the oil look like?

Im used to the golden brown at this mileage of a gas engine.

Mine is far from that.

Also, is there not a way of checking the transmission fluid level?

Black oil within one minute on Diesel engine. Don't worry about the transmission oil. It is seal for the next oil change @60k miles. Do a search, there is procedure on how to check transmission oil with a overflow tub.

Engine oil colour is a poor reflection of its condition, regardless of fuel type.

Diesel oil is BLACK by the time I get home from the dealer's having an oil change.

My car doesn't burn a drop between 10,000 mile oil changes, and that's after 94,000 miles currently.
