Parking Assist

Wonder how many drivers here with the parking assist has used it?

I never did until 2 weeks ago when I had a chance to use it in a parking lot with no traffic around.

The spot was on left so I put by left blinker on. I passed the spot and the arrow showed up next to the "P" in the cluster. Put the car on reverse and the instructions showed up in the cluster. It worked flawlessly. The car ended up right in the middle of the parking spot between the two cars.

Amazingly I had this same opportunity to use the park assist again in the very same parking lot in the very same parking spot and again it worked flawlessly.

I have it on my car. I have actually used it a handful of times. Admittedly I haven't really tried following the instructions on it rather than simply using it to gauge whether or not my car would fit in a given spot that I knew was tight....

That said, I used it 2 days ago, car fit like a charm... too bad the A$$hole behind me wasn't careful as they scraped my rear bumper when pulling out.

I actually took my car in to the shop to get a quote on the misc. door dings and scrapes from other people over the last year. It is depressing when I wash the car!

I use it very frequently but i have never used it to park between two cars in a parking lot, i did not know you can do that. I have only used the feature for parallel parking and it works like a dream.

Are we talking about the real assist parking or the instructional assist, where you are still controlling the steering? I have the instructional assist and have never used it. I use the P> to help size up a spot, but then I am on my own parking the car, which is not an issue.

I play around with it a few times, its much faster if I park it manually. I learned how to drive in the city, so parallel parking is second nature to me. With the help of the rear cam, the camera lines and the front sensors, it makes it pretty easy to parallel park, even in a tight space. Of course I would never park my car in a tight space for the reasons mentioned above, I would rather walk a bit or pay for a parking lot.

I use it occasionally.

My favorite time was in Naples FL downtown at twilight (pretty dark). Lots of traffic creating along and almost no spaces. One opened up right in front of me, so I let the car parallel park itself.

The car did it's thing in one fell swoop. The car behind me pulled up and they gave a thumbs up - they thought I was a perfect parallel parker.

Use it twice, out of curiosity. First time kind of scared me because it was backing up a bit faster than I would like for parallel parking. But space was big and it had no issue. I haven't tried parking it 90 degree in a parking lot yet. Somehow it just never beckon me to pull into a 90 degree space. Instruction, never knew there were any special instruction, I just click yes when it ask me on the dash.

I don't really trust the system and still prefer to park myself. I been pulling into all kinds of spot in nyc for years and never had a problem and very careful about tapping the bumpers.

Guess I should have mentioned the parking assist without the automatic parking. My car is a 2010 model and the full functioning parking assist was not available.

And the new parking assist should not be called assist as it parks the car by itself. Should it be called "Self park" or something?

Mine gives instructions of how much to turn the wheel and how far to back up and then turn the wheel again etc.

Mercedes term for the self park is "active park assist", and why I asked since your thread title can be confusing to some.

Do you control the speed with the throttle and brakes? I know on my CLS, I control the speed and the car does the steering.

No I did not control the car when I was using the feature. I have a 2014 E550 and when I find a parking spot and put the car in reverse it will sometimes ask me if I want to use the parking feature. I just hit either yes or no and it park without any input from me. However, since I am still uncomfortable with the whole system I keep my foot very close to the brake. But to be fair, in the two times I used it, it park by itself with no issue.

I have the old instruction style. Since I haven't parallel-parked in the last two years, I haven't really gotten to try it.
