ABS Problem

ABS Problem

After parking for a couple of hours, my wife came to the car and started the car but it wouldn't go into gear. Foot was on the brake. The ABS indicator light was on and the word BRAKE was displayed. Wife said that the brake pedal was about 1/2 way to the floor froom it's normal depressed position while the ABS light was on.. Started and stopped engine a couple of times, turned off radio, a/c and finally message disappeared. Then car went into gear. Car has 7500 miles on it.
Any idea what's going on?
