I've looked at the threads here and I haven't seen anything about updating the GPS's on some older models . Not sure if it's something you take to Mercedes and they do

It depends on the Nav system and the year. My 2014 requires a $249 DVD which supposedly cannot be reused for other vehicles.

You have to buy the disk to update, as mentioned above, around 250. And don't fall for any of the scams that offer one that has already been used, somehow they are only one time, one car.

Did you get burned by this? I though they didn't require a unique code until 2012 models.

Hmm... from memory I believe it's NTG4 that doesn't require a code, at one point they went to NTG4.5 and that requires a one time use code. You can also still pass the disk around with an NTG4 system, not with an NTG4.5 system. I think NTG4.5 was in 2012 but they might have started at the tail end of 2011. I think the way to tell was whether you had the PCMCIA slot or not. So if you see the originals on eBay you're ok.
