well, I did had the same thing today (after reading this post yesterday).
I just got my vehicle delivered, they gave me old engine and cabin air filters (as they put new ones), so, I used the foot-tap feature to open the trunk, and while keeping the stuff in the corner, my leg touched the bumper and the lid started dropping by and hit on my head, and didn't stop. But testing with hand stopped it..!

Resurrection from the dead.

I am so happy to have found this thread. A couple times now, I've been organizing things in the trunk of my wagon and the hatch starting coming down firmly. As many in this thread already indicated, it is pretty forceful and hard to stop. The first time, it really pressed me in but subsequently recognizing what it is, I now quickly hit the open button handle or kick under the front.

The leg kick opening is a lot more sensitive than my old wagon.

Each new technology is coming with "baby teeth" and I would take the original issue as such. Member having later model indicate the sensors have been updated.
That reminds me first remote trunk switch I had on 1997 E class. It was placed on central, horizontal console and would open by pressing down. That it the spot where Brutus like to ride (14 lb JRT).
The system had program that would deactivate the circuit at above 8 mph. but ask me how many times I was pulling to parking lot with open trunk?
Since the system has update on newer models, very likely there might be update available for older models. All it takes is ask dealer.

Very good points. As recommended above, the advice is to stand with the feet a hint farther away from under the car and I've not had a repeat. However, the first time was pretty disarming. I can imagine how a smaller person would have difficulty pushing back against it.

Hmm, the S class has a slow opening trunk, unlike the w212, I seem to recall even my 2011 E's trunk flying open.......

I don't mind the opening- it's the closing that got me.

Would not pass an OSHA test for sure so if company car... hmmmmmmmm..

Next Lawyer who buys an E class and gets his head BONKED will get this fixed for everyone.

I do not use foot close thing... heck I can barely get it to open using the swing foot method... I look like a goof kicking at nothing...
I do use the buttons to close aither normal or with all doors locked close.

Yes the truck lid supports are worn out. I've replaced mine a couple times with aftermarket supports and they failed after a few years. I did some research and found out that Stabilus in Germany makes the OEM shocks. I bought these, they cost twice as much of many aftermarket shocks, but still half the cost of OEM parts. These are great, I've never been able to have the trunk stay open in mid travel. They are a little stiff, but that's what provides the proper support. Don't ever bother with any of the other brands, Get Stabilus, you won't regret it.
