Having a hard time finding definite information. Hopefully you guys can quickly help me out.

My friend is in the market for an E550. We're trying to figure out when the engines changed. The E class was refreshed in 2010 I believe, but the E550 had a 5.5 V8. Was it without turbos? If so, when did they switch to the V8 bi-turbo? That's specifically the engine he's looking to get due to the tuning capabilities.

 

Yes, E550 2010 and 2011 are V8 5.5 NA engines (naturally aspirated engine). 2012 and up the engines are 4.8 with turbos.

 

Correct. I've had both and they are equally superb, with the 5.5 naturally aspirated sounding very mean. The TTV8 is no slouch though and can be tuned to near 600 HP and ridiculous torque if he is so inclined. The rated 402 HP is a joke. It is pushing more than that right out of the factory.

The V8's in todays Mercs are pure beasts, and are forces to be reckoned with.
The N/A 8-cyl in my W211 E550 had (the same or) more hp and torque than a W210 E55 AMG/2001-2001 S600 and S55/W202 C43 AMG from yesteryear---now that is saying something! Likely the reason why Mercedes had to step up their game with the W211 E55 and 2003+ S55/S600.

These cars can haul @$$!!!

 

I'm vacillating like an idiot and worrying about the warranty. I need to get over that. haha
I did put on some big grippy tires, however, to handle the power. lol

So much potential for tuning and upgrades.
