Believe it or not.

Not sure this will ever help anyone, but, it might. Just purchased a 2014 E350 Sport. Found one key not working (would start the car/unlock the car, but, would not lock the car or open the trunk)- Mercedes would not cover the key under warranty - said that someone had spilled a liquid on it and caused some internal corrosion. While waiting for the selling dealer to get a replacement "board" for the key, I found the car trunk of my car open while the car was siitting in the garage. Several times. Thought I may have opened the car by pressing on the key in my pocket until I found the trunk open when the good key was laying on a counter inside the house. This never happened away from my garage.

Long story short - the bad key was ending signals at random times to the car. Trunk opening was stopped by removing the battery from the bad key.

Weird.

2014 E550-sold 😩
Key fob ghost. Maybe there is an extra key somewhere hidden in the trunk and is rejecting the trunk locking procedure and forcing it to open.

You have to use sufficient amounts of duct tape or other binding materials. It's very easy for adrenaline to power a panicking hostage into ripping off restraints.

Once they're free, simply pulling on the glow-in-the-dark trunk release frees them to escape from you.

The old school know how to properly tie knots. Join the Boy Scouts or purchase a good knot book...problem solved and you don't have to buy new keys or visit the dealership.

If it's not keyless go, I think you may be able to swap out the innards for another key with better buttons. I think it's a lot harder with keyless go. Otherwise I'd try cleaning it with some electrical contact cleaner, take the battery out, spray it all down and wait a few days for it to all dry out and then try it again. Or use the $100 off $200 mentioned somewhere else and get a new key.
