High Mile W212 E350 4matic

Anybody else out there with super high miles? What's your experience been? I just picked up a 2011 with nearly 174K. Prior owner said all that's gone wrong in the past 110K that he owned it is a headlight bulb. it runs and drives like new. I also plan on racking up the miles as well.

Would love to hear other high mile stories!

Congrats on the new car. I don't have a high milage car (yet) but keep us posted on how things go with your car!

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think nobody would! I am glad this is the last year for the non-DI engines. That may have something to do with why it still runs so well.

I'd be particularly interested to know if there are any high mile '12 or newer.

Glad to hear the M272 V6 is still going strong at that mileage. I've got aW212 with the M273 V8, it's "only" at 93k miles and I've had to replace quite a lot of parts on it.
I hope you'll continue to log trouble free miles and enjoy it, it's a very nice car.

Thanks! I just found your thread about "Gunther" and he looks very nice! Wow, that is a lot of stuff you had to do to it. Makes me wonder if the guy I bought it from really didn't know what has been done to the car. He basically took it to the mechanic and said "do whatever it needs" in terms of maintenance. I am supposedly going to get service history records but we'll see.

Mine 2014 is at `174k as well.
Former limo. Come with bad MAF and 200 miles later Ox sensor went bad.
I don't mind to replace high-mileage sensors, but do mind $300 price tag for each.

For what it's worth, the W212 is a hugely popular taxi in Germany, albeit with a diesel engine. I've talked to several German taxi drivers and they insist that Mercedes are the only German cars that can keep up with taxi use- and bear in mind that it's a heavily urbanized fleet with lots of stop and go - not just high speed Autobahn use They are easily getting 250k miles out of those cars.

I can't remember the last time I saw a BMW 5 series or Audi A6 taxi in Germany.

If you're in the states try looking up ecs tuning or fcp euro or any of the other big euro car parts shops. I've found a Bosch O2 sensor, for the M273 for around 50$. There's no need to pay MB 300 or 400 to replace each.
MAF goes for 90$, again for the Bosch, which I think is one of the best brands.

Yeah, those 2,2 l diesels are pretty much indestructible if taken care of properly.
I've seen one in Frankfurt which had 470000km and it felt very smooth and sorted out.
Things change with the bigger capacity motors, especially with 4matics. You're more prone to have more issues on the later cars.

Is it the upstream one or the downstream O2 sensor that's bad? It's normally the upstream ones that go, normally if a downstream one goes, that's usually a sign that the cat is toast or there's something else wrong like bad wiring or a leak. But with your mileage, anything is possible.

The upstream ones on rockauto are about $116 and online you can find the Bosch 17107 for about that same price range on eBay.

Would this happen to be a wagon? I was looking at one that got sold with this mileage recently. I'm now looking at another wagon with 144,000 miles. No issues with it though. Was wondering what diagnostics software people are using for this generation.

No, it's a sedan. It was a Craigslist find. I got it for $8K. The starter battery was a bit weak, so I replaced both it and the aux battery. Only thing that I've really noticed with it it is that sometimes it takes a few seconds for the key to be recognized to crank the car. I've had other cars that have done this. I am going to start carrying both keys with me.

$8000! I would have bought that too. Nice find. You probably need to get the keys reprogrammed. Other than that, the crank position sensor was an issue on older generations. These cars are beautiful but full of stuff!

Nice buy. I bought my '13 with 88k and she's pushing 105k now. Not nearly as much as yours, but a decent run for a '13.

That's the most I've heard of on a post-2011 DI engine. Any carbon build up issues?

Good question. Honestly, no idea. I haven't had it open to look, but no issues so far. Spark plugs looked pristine when I changed them at 95k.

That's a good sign! Hopefully MB won't have issues like other manufacturers.

I believe for MB, they call for spark plug changes at 60k so they may have been done at that time. In 2012 the engine was upgraded to a direction injection (DI) and part of that included the multispark system which fires the spark plugs up to 4x per cycle instead of the one or two you'd normally get. Prior to that, the 2010-2011 engines were just the regular 268hp v6. Going to direct injection in 2012+ gave it a boost to 302hp.

For other manufacturers DI engines tend to have carbon building up in the valves which restricts air flow and reduces power. Some MFG engines show this issue with as little as 20k miles while others don't show this till much higher mileage.
VW/Audi seems to have the worst case with BMW close behind.
Not much talk of carbon buildup in MB DI engines. Maybe MB has found a way to avoid it or reduce it significantly.
Some folks are hesitant to buy a DI engine because of this. But most modern engines are going to DI for more power and better fuel efficiency.

And others feel that you're less likely to have problems if you use a top tier fuel. You can go to their website to see which gas stations have top tier fuel. For instance, Costco is top tier. They have more detergents than regular fuels and in theory you're less likely to get deposits.
