2014 E350 Solar Windshield? Effects Radar Detector Range?
Hi,
Got a new Uniden R3 Radar Detector but it is not working well. Want to rule out the front windshield as the cause of the issue but not sure how to do so. In other forums I read about how many factory vehicles have some sort of solar protection built into the windshield. Not sure if my 2014 does or not and any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Yeah that's a common issue. The easiest way to do this is to find a known radar source like an automatic door opener. Plug the detector into your cig. lighter, but take it off the windshield. Open your window and then move the radar detector back and forth between being behind the windshield and sticking it out the window with no windshield blocking it. You'll find out pretty quickly if the windshield diminishes your R3's detection capabilities.
Here's a video that shows you the issue on a GL320.

I don't know about radar detectors but, my windshield mounted EZ-Pass transponder does not work through my 2014 windshield. After going round by round with NC Quick Pass and 2 different transponders, neither worked. I had to opt for a bumper mounted transponder which works just fine.

I've been using radar detectors for years. Window mount with my evo and now custom installed behind the grill on the benz. The dot matrix and or tint will effect the performance. Best to place it under or behind the mirror just below the matrix or tint. Also be aware of the state you use it in. If they are using laser, it's immediate response. Once your detector says RADAR.... Usually too late. If you want to defeat those message me...
