722.9 trans slipping between 1st and 2nd

Ive got a 2005 E500 sedan with 170k and 722.9 transmission in it that started to slip between 1st and 2nd gear the other day. No banging or jerking and if I drive it very gently I don't seem to experience the issue. My initial thought was that it was low on trans oil. I did pull a P0730 gear ratio code out of it but I cleared it a couple days ago and it hasn't come back. I took it to a generic transmission shop because they said they had lots of experience with that trans and sounded knowledgeable over the phone and would do diag for free. After they "looked at it", they said that the fluid cant be low because there aren't any leaks, the trans is sealed for life so they cant service it and that they would need to rebuild it. Maybe it does need to be re-built but based on this guys verbiage I don't think he knows as much about the 722.9 as he was letting on.

I think at this point I just want to go the cheap route and a basic trans service done. Then take it from there.

Then next move would be conductor plate AND valve body? Seems like conductor plate would be the likely culprit. Do I need to do both?

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Thanks.

You might want to post to the W211 threads, as this is the W212 forum.

The trans is actually a 40K service item. It was sealed for life, but that changed when they had issues with the 722.9 trans.
You can check it, but you need an infrared thermometer to make sure it is at 80C temp.
Here's a service DIY. Your indy can do this. Run away from that trans shop...they just want to milk your wallet dry.
