ESC warning on a 2011 E550
when trying to start the warning message ECS inoperative came on and the car would not start, after 3 tries the car started and operation was possible. I went to a 3rd party MB repair shop with the car running we ran a scan on the car and the faults were gone. In the computer memory the non start showed. Car run ok after that. Not sure how to trouble shoot.

Can you further describe what did or did not happen when you attempted to start it 3 or 4 times? Did nothing happen except the ECS inoperative message? Did you hear or see anything else? What do you think was different about the attempt that got the car started?

Luck was what allowed restart, MB thinking Ignition start module ??? Last scan showed sometimes no communication btw items needed to start car.
It does start after 3 to 8 attempts. I have battery life and power on all gauges just no turn (communication btw start modules) then boom its stats and
ESC light disappears car drives normal. Usually Leave sit while in a me

Buy "Solar" battery tester, as testing the batteries is pretty tricky and that is the best tool for the job.
Lot of troubles on those cars show with low battery, so this is the tool you will appreciate for long time.

There is a possibility that it is a wheel speed sensor. I had one that was dirty and it would present a similar fault. I spent a great deal of time chasing it down with a star diagnostic computer. If no fault history is present that's going to make confirming it a more difficult task. That said, I don't think that it popped up as such each time it happened. Regardless, if you are able to do any of your own work, it's a simple pull the wheel, remove sensor, clean, replace. Also massage the wiring harness a bit to ensure it is properly connected and that the connector in the front wheel well isn't corroded.
The no start situation is a wild card though and would point towards more of a battery condition as mentioned above unless there was some sort of fault triggered by the ECS to make it inoperable. Good luck and report back once you isolate the problem.

I too have the ESC inoperative issue. Its defiantly not a battery issue. the car starts just fine if many attempts are made. Its more of a module not sending start signal after I push the dash button. Still seems very anoying. I have heard is an issue with the throttle.
