E Class Engine Choices
Any words of wisdom about the long term reliability of the E250 Blue Tec, E350, and E400 engine choices? I am open to any of them but if one is substantially more reliable than another that would be a big influence on my choice.

When E63 gives you good looks (for people who knows what the badge means) the E250 Bluetec , reaching 60 mpg is real econobox and seems those engines avoided the (relatively small) issues V6 Bluetecs have.
Compare how the engine choices hold the value. Back in 1998/99 E55 cost $15k or 30% more than E300DT. Now, after those years comparing cars with close to 200k miles, you can buy E55 for 4 grands, while diesel still oscillate around $10k
Good to have the choices.

Another option buying a clean mint pristine used w212 MY 10-12 E550 4matic. Spend 25-30k low miles in the low 20's. One owner. And the front is when of the most aggressive best looks MB has ever produced.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of those choices. The E400 probably has the smallest sample size to go off of, so maybe lean away from that one if you're looking for a tried and true engine type.

In last decade MB had whole number of ops on different engines. The famous balance shaft on early 350, than gummed up valves on DI engines. Timing chains, who don't last as long as engine.
Even diesels don't seem as bulletproof as those manufactured 20-30 years ago.

I'm partial to the E250 Blue Tec myself. I have owned my 2014 for about 1 year and it has been completely trouble free. I get 35+ mpg in town and close to 50 mpg on the road running 75-80 mph. I just had the 40k B service completed and nothing turned up out of the ordinary.

2015 GLK250 Problems
My GLK250 with 117,000kms has been in service 8 weeks with an engine problem---extremely rough idle when cold. The problem was just figured out and should be repaired this week. The engine control module was causing too rich a fuel mixture which totally plugged up the exhaust gas recycling system. The mass air sensor,a glow plug and the glow plug controller were also defective. I have extended warranty so the $13,000.00plus bill will be covered and I've had a loaner the whole time. In the course of things the techs have told me that todays MB diesels are more problematic than MB gas engines---due to the VW mess new diesels are no longer available here anyway---but in retrospect I wish I had bought the 2015 GLK350 and I can no longer reconmend the 250 diesel.

My local dealer at Foothill Ranch was generous enough to let me drive the 250, 350, and 400. I liked the diesel 250 the most because the pick up off the line was perfect for the car and town driving. The problem with the diesels is that almost all the cars in the resale fleet are the basic models with few, if any, options. I was looking for a car with leather ventilated seats and Distronic cruise control. To get those options I am almost forced to get an S Class. The 350 was my next favorite to drive because he 400 biturbo could be unpredictable when it spooled up. Or I am just an old fart too slow for a real car. Anyway, it turns out that very few 350's are sold with the correct options.
I might have to look at buying a new 300E to get the options I want. I will continue to cast around for a 212 with the right options and see what happens. I have to get something by May.

E350
Hi
In addition to the 2015 GLK250 I have a 2014 E350 loaded with Distronic,Ventilated Seats,Adaptive/Massage Seat etc---I snaped it up Dec 2017 with 70,000kms and bought it with extended warranty. The 302hp responds very well. I would avoid the E300 4 cylinder---the noisy 4 just does not seem Mercedes like. The E400 is quicker off the line than my E350 and there will be more appearing on Mercedes CPO inventory that are well equiped.RP

E350-M276engine-Wikipdia Quote based on MB references.
The M276 also includes direct injection with piezo-electrically controlled injectors for more precise fuel delivery, multi-spark ignition that allows for multiple ignition events during the combustion stroke, and modified accessories (such as the fuel pump, water pump, oil pump, and alternator) that reduce parasitic loads.
