E550 Muffler Delete

Evenin Gents,

New member here and a proud owner of an E550. I must admit I wasn't looking to buy a merc when I moved to Canada as I have always owned BMWs but a friend of mine back home in England convinced me to buy the Merc and I am happy I took his advice. Here are some details about my car:-

2011 NA E550 4Matic 125th Year Avantgarde Anniversary Edition
Bought for $28,500 @ 88,000 kms
Fully Loaded
Extended Limited Warranty until October 2018

Current Mods include a private number plate and tinted windows (Formula 1 Pinnacle Series - 50% Sides and 30% Rear) I plan to change the side indicators to clear and add a boot lip spoiler in the near future too.

Muffler Delete
As stated in the title, I have some questions with regards to doing a Muffler Delete. I have looked through the forums on here prior to posting this and the general consensus appears to be to just do a muffler delete and keep everything else stock. I am interested to know how a Naturally Aspirated E550 would sound without the mufflers and everything stock. I did see some posts on here but they were for a TTV8 model, which I must admit sounded amazing! So amazing that it convinced me to book an appointment in two weeks time but before I bite the bullet and do the delete, it be amazing to get some more feedback/advise on this. Specifically if this set up leads to drone or not.

Welcome and congrats on getting an e550.

i have been driving all stock and without mufflers for about 3 years now if not more.
i also had resonators deleted(in the middle of the car) without mufflers and it was too loud for my liking. Then i welded those back in and and pretty satisfied with the outcome.
P.s. i did put a little bit of sound deadening material in trunk space though to make it a bit more quiet.

i also did have a short video on YouTube of how that sounds , as well as other threads on this forum with a lot of people reviews and tries.

I just checked out your posts and that sounds amazing! I just know that V8 needs to breathe and after watched your video I feel a lot more confident.

One thing though, you mentioned that you put some sound deadening material in the trunk. Was that because you were getting drone or the novelty of a loud exhaust wore off lol

Id say there was maybe a lil but of drone , but not to the point where i would hate it or get annoying too much...
but it didn't bother me , i did that just to lower the noise overall inside the cabin and to improve music sound so nothing would rattle also.

Would you say it is not acceptable without acoustic insulation? Reason I ask is that sometimes I have to take clients in my car and the last thing I want is to have a loud cabin where it impacts the ability to conversate normally

I know the E-class can be prone to rattling especially considering the rough roads here in Alberta but did you find that once you done the delete that your interior trim started to rattle more?

ummm , i dont really drive people in back seat usually just my girl , but when i had 2 passengers in the back they actually told me that its not that loud in the back , and maybe even a little bit quiet than if you seat in front(one of the passengers was my best friend and he drove the car also so he had heard it from both sides) but i personally didn't have such an unpleasant experience not to be able to hear anything. So it shouldn't be apro3blem if u concerned.

well lol , it did have rattles before the muffler delete , so in my opinion i don't think it made it any worse at all since the rattles and creaks were already there i remember for sure.

That is good to hear! How was your girls reaction to the muffler delete? Lol

It is a shame that the E-class has rattling issues. Sometimes my panaromic sunroof rattles when driving over rough surfaces but it randomly stopped by itself so I’m hoping it never returns!

Finally, can you please advise which sound deadening material you purchased and did you install this yourself or had it done?

she loved it so she went and got a dinan exhaust on her 4 series bmw lol .. #facts

panoramic roof fix : tighten some bolts that secure roof to the body. There was a thread about that also , so its not a problem if you got some time on your hands to fix that.

its really straight forward to install.. i removed the spare and battery from the trunk and then just layed it nicely.
go on ebay and look for the one that suits your budget.. anything will already make it much more improved. As far as Sq ft i used , im not sure as its been a minute and i dont remember.

I also did the delete with J Pipe addition with advice from belarus27 and I could not be happier. Especially using the paddle shifters in Manual mode, the car sounds amazing. Good luck!

I want to avoid deleting the Resonators as I fear this may impact my warranty, having mufflers removed is still a risk mind.

Is your Benz naturally aspirated and did you get any drone at all with your set up?

I only did the Mufflers (with the add of the 29" capped J pipe that is added to the straight pipe) and the Resonators are still there. Mine is NA and the the drone is very very minimal. When you are cruising, there is no drone. Only drone I get is a for a few seconds when going up a hill or above like 1.5k - 2k rpm iirc. My wife also drives it sometimes and she has never complained about it. She just gives me crap when I go into manual and like to hear those pipes breath Then it sounds like the roaring v8 it should lol.

Nice! I hate to ask but any chance you can send us a picture of the underneath of your car to see the pipe configuration?

When I went in to book my appointment the mechanic showed me the pipe he was going to use and it had an elbow but not sure if that is a J-pipe though

Cheers mate!

Am I right in saying that the pipe to the right is capped and the left side is the one which leads to the tip?

Interesting! This is the first time I have ever seen such a set up. What is the main advantage of installing a J-pipe as opposed to just straight? Im guessing it is not as loud and eliminate drone?

One more thing, the 29” is a very specific number lol, how did you come to that conclusion?

Apoligies for so many questions, I just don’t wanna mess this up you know!

There was a thread about the reasoning behind the specific length, not sure where it is. I think anything around that length should be fine/ Not much of an advantage if any. More of a way to let the v8 make its' noise (other can chime in here about the advantages/disadvantages).

No worries. I did my time in researching as well. I found this video of a e500 wagon which I found sounded the closes. Everytime I have taken a video of mine, it has never sounded as good as it does in real life. I will try and see if I have a decent video, but you hear the feed back in the video and not in person. I will try and find one and post it later.

That’s the sound I am after, loud without being obnoxious!

I found that formula on reddit and I can see why 29 is the magic number for V8s

Thanks a lot man! I look forward to seeing the video

Ive seen your vids and it sounds beast! When you say louder, do you mean louder than a J pipe?

I did a quick google search on the J pipe and it seems like a popular solution to minimise/eliminate drone so as it stands I am leaning towards that configuration a bit more however need to find some vids before I make my mind up

Hey Belarus27, Can you please tell me the specific RPM where you get drone if at all?

Reason why I ask is so that I can calculate the size of the J-Pipe

I have literally the same setup. I was told that the J pipe had to go up further down the exhaust but the car does not have enough space for a J pipe to fit. But, the J pipes did reduce the drone a little bit. The drone is bearable. My wife drives it and doesn't complain as well. I do have to say that it because really annoying on the highway. What I do now is, on the high way, I don't let the trans go pass gear 6. That way the tach meter stays 2k rpms or higher. I probably burn more gas that way but the sound of the breathing v8 is SO much better. My advice, it WILL drone, but only slightly. If you're willing to deal with it then definitely go for it. If not, find another option.
