Exclamation Engine Cover Star Emblem

Although I haven't seen this issue in the W212 forum, I've seen others (eg, W211) complain about the star emblem falling off their engine cover. I noticed mine was loose. When I went to clean the emblem, I snapped it. As with others who have looked for a replacement, I can't find the emblem for sale. You can get a cover with the emblem, but I don't want to pay >$100. Some suggest using a wheel emblem, etc, but those are too big. My 2012 E550 engine cover emblem is about 65mm (versus the 85mm or so for a rear emblem).
So, does anybody know a source for the emblem, or suggestions for a substitute? I'm considering 3D printing and painting, but I thought I'd check the forum first.

Just buy it, i did. Didn't want to go thru the hassle and make it look cheap. It's not a Honda.

In the USA they make you pay through the nose. Uk has a lot more accessories than the USA also.

I have a 2014 and mine is missing also. Purchased in Jan 2017 and it was missing when I purchased the car as certified pre-owned. Didn't notice it until about a week after owning it. I didn't say anything to the dealer as I thought they would not replace something like that. It drives me nuts every time I lift the hood. Would love to get it replaced but as a previous posted said, don't want to pay the $100 for the whole cover. Ugh.

Just a shot in the dark but maybe there's an alternative emblem that may not be the exact size, but that could at least put something into the area. Something like the adhesive back emblem you can get for the COMAND button? Yes its smaller size though

Just looking at alternatives.

Yup, if I could find the emblem for $20, I would definitely do it ...

Thanks, I looked for a sticker too, but nothing was the right size.

Ebay has multi media control knob stickers. The size is 29mm. Since I have amg sport package I ordered it and looks great. They aren't too costly either

I have that exact emblem on my COMAND knob just like the picture. It is waaaaaaaaayyyyy too small for what is needed. And it would probably fall off after 1 day since it is just a sticker. Thanks.

I bought a star grille from 55tech for my 2011 E350. This same grille I also used on my 2010 E550. The grille came with the star badge to install on the hood in place of the stand-up star but the badge is way too big. I bought the hood badge from dfwdude who made them using the original MB stand-up star base.

Anyway, the plastic hood badge that came with the grille is in a original MB parts box. The badge is 57 mm in diameter and looks exactly as in the picture of the Comand button shows, is just a lot bigger.

The badge is in a bag with part number tag on it: A 129 888 01 16 it says. This same part number also reads on the back of the badge.

It has two prongs and a plastic piece to lock it in place on the hood. I have not looked at the mounting on the engine cover but obviously some holes at least needs to be drilled for installation as the prongs are vertically positioned on the badge. May just be easier to epoxy glue it in place...?

Here's my 3D printed prototype. I wasn't going to use red, it was just the color in the printer. I made it just a little larger to fill the opening better. I may reduce it to the same size as the original. The red doesn't look too bad actually, but I will likely go with silver.

I lost my emblem on a M278, M276, M273. Have yet to lose one on the M177, M157, M113k. The star I was able to save off of M274 measures 2.75 inches/~7cm in diameter.

The red looks great. I may request one in the future if you are still making.

i think its a brilliant idea! i was searching for one for my engine cover, could not find it anywhere except to buy all the cover with the logo, which is 100 GBP or more
so i sketched up a logo the size i need, exported it to stl file, sent to the online 3d printing service. paid 7.5 GBP, which i think is very cheap. the result is very good. And there is the benefit of being able to choose the color. Have a look at the pictures below.

Is that plastic or metal / alloy?

There is a public domain (free) MB Logo on Thingiverse...

Just d-load the stl file https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1552272

and then learn how to use Tinkercad to resize it to the needed size. https://www.tinkercad.com/

BTW, all the libraries here in Dallas area offer 3D printing services. Check your local library for similar services. They charge no more that 10¢ per gram for the material used. (I'm guessing no more than a dollar). You pick your color from those offered by the library.

The larger question is to pick a material that will stand up to engine compartment heat. .I'm guessing ABS plastic will be better than PLA...

When you choose material to print from, you have to choose heat resistant material. Don't remember what material there was, in the properties is was saying heat resistant. we will see, did not drive for long enough yet )

Some (but not all) 3D printshops offer "metalized" filaments. Plastic with metal powder infused within. These are not as strong as real, cast metal. But in this application, we're not looking for strength, but a static, decorative item. The metalized filament print might be more heat resistant.
