Angry Hood message even though hood is closed. Help

I give my hood a pretty hardy slam when I am done working and when I get in the car and start driving, it keeps saying the hood is open. I pull over, open the hood (again), and slam shut (again). Then the message usually goes away after the second or third slam. Seems like it only wants to accept that I closed it when the car is running. Can anyone help? Where is the hood sensor located at? Maybe it is out of place and I just need to reposition it.

Thanks in advance!
T

I don't feel like running outside in -5 degree weather to look under my hood, but I had to replace the switch on my '04 E500 for this same reason. It was a very cheap part that includes the sensor. The sensor is essentially a metal switch that is pushed away from making contact when the hood is shut, thus telling the SAM everything is A-OK. I would replace the switch. Open the hood and you will see how it works.

Thank you sir, I will look into it. Read some others saying that they just had to reposition their current sensor because it was out of place.

Had this start happening me this week (07 W203 C180), immediately before it's yearly NCT so the fault immobilising the windscreen wipers was an issue! Gave the connection a clean with contact spray then used a cable tie to keep the metal down on the switch (after unsuccessfully just trying to bend the metal so it would work as previously to no affect). Worked to get me through the test but it's still coming up on the dash intermittently, I'm thinking it'd would just be worth ordering the part and switching out as seems relatively easy to change? Anyone have the part number to share?
wouldn't mind also seeing any pics from anyone else who's gone the cable tie method, I'm thinking maybe if I adjusted where the tie is it might sort it better.

This is the W212 section of this site. You might get a better response in your cars specific section. Replacing the sensor is generally a cheap and easy fix.
