Service b5 wont reset

A friend of mine purchased a 2010 e350 and the service B5 error is on. It has had the oil changed but according the message it as exceeded the service b5 by 14,400 miles. when I try to reset it using the steering wheel, it wont go to full service or any screen allowing me to reset the dash message. I read that after a certain amount of miles exceeded you can no longer reset it on the dash. Is that true? Is there a way to reset it other that take it to Mercedes for a scan tool? Will other scan tools do it or can I access a hidden menu somehow to do it myself?
thanks,

Besides getting into the hidden menus by using the steering wheel controls, what other methods can be used to access the computer to reset the service b message?

Is there a scan tool that I can buy without taking it to the dealership?

Personally, I find it somewhat difficult to use the steering wheel controls to reset the service 'reminder'. I always have to go through several iterations of the instructions before the reset succeedes. When I do finally succeed, I tell myself that I will remember what I did incorrectly the next time. I never do. So, it's try several times until I do it correctly. Yes, you can buy a scanner/tool that will reset the reminder, but I don't know specifically which ones, there are so many available.
