I like the cars acceleration and occasionally enjoy a sporty drive.
Every time I start the car - I have to push the button to select S (sport) mode to get the car starting in 1st gear (not 2nd) and racier shifts.
It rained all day 2 days ago - so I thought - on my way home from work, why not de-select ESC. To see if I could get some tire spin or drift action.
The car then reads
when I go to shut it off.
I started up the next day ... ESC still off. Great - ESC has been off for 2 days now.
Got a little tire squealing - shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear under hard acceleration tonight, on dry pavement. Yes I forgot to select S ... so my acceleration run began in 2nd gear.
Will the tires light up in 1st gear with ESC off ?
I can only get the ESC off by putting the car into dyno mode... is this different between our 550 models? Or is there another way and I don't know? Is it possible to get AWD tire spin on acceleration?

It is in Driver Assist menu- toggle to off and leave it that way. Stays turned off overnight.
On the way home from work - at a left hand turn ... from a stand still, turning 90 degrees onto a slight up hill - I felt the car was particularly strong ... felling like it wanted to drift. Left the car behind in the dust like hitting the hyper space button. felt good.
I found a quiet road where I could see (15 C / 59 F tonight, dry pavement) if I could light up the tires from a standing start. Nope.
I decided to try a hand held video ... lots of things to manage on a two way street. Maybe I did not get my foot up into the beast mode area of the accelerator. Seems like somewhere between 5.8 & 6.0 seconds - 0 to 60.
Maybe she was not feeling good tonight ...
Can’t seem to post my 12 second video clip of the speedometer.
I vividly recall one time I turned off the ESC (simple button) on the 1999 SL 500 and burned a U turn ... smoke and squealing galore coming from the RWD.

Gonn'a look for that, thanks!
The parking lot at my work is vacant during the weekend, and rather large. I've gotten a little squirrely there once... curious (eager) to see what'll happen with the ESC off.

Well I took advantage of this over the last weekend. Quite fun. Burned around in my work parking lot for a few minutes. Probably not going to be a regular thing though, unless I feel like burning through my tires on a regular basis.

Oh yes. Not on straights... but on turns. Quite easily actually. Though the tires didn't get as easily as I would've wanted for the situation, so I sometimes got a bad vibration when the car was sliding as it was trying to grip.
Looks like you used up all your gas - enjoying the extra power?
I drive to work 10 minutes each way by quiet country road, streets with stop lights or freeway. All about the same time ... so lucky for me - I have the luxury of hitting the gas to have a little fun in the morning or evening.
I do drive to job sites - 1 hour away - and do notice the consumption as I burn my way through the miles. But then I get $0.55 / Km to do that - so I still have fun.
I have never felt that the economy of a lesser car offsets the pleasure of a big V8. That goes back through Jeeps, Grand Pixs, old beaters... I just like the power.
Now - maybe there is a 2019 E 53 AMG 4Matic Cabriolet in our one car family future. I could go to 6 cylinders for that turbo action.

I was just wondering. I can burn my RWD wheels but was not sure a 4WD can do it...
One time I accelerated hard from a light near my office ... in a 100 ft the road crested a hill and dropped off on a right hand curve down hill.
With the ESC on it felt like being hot out of a cannon ... with some tire spin at the crest of the hill when the car unweighted - a small amount of drift as the car regained grip over the crest into the turn.
