CV Axle Break?

CV Axle Break?
I have a '12 E550 w about 116k on it. Family and I were driving on interstate yesterday at about 75-80MPH. Started hearing a slight vibration/rubbing noise when I would accelerate. Very faint so thought it was something in the car vibrating (bottle/change/various kid item). About 5 minutes later started to get louder and about 30 seconds later BAM! Sounds like gun going off.... I figure I blew a tire so I slow down and was fortunately near an exit so about 45 seconds later we are off the side of the road. Get out of the car and expect to see a shredded tire. Nothing. No tires at all damaged. Think crap... did tranny or something break.... no fluids leaking (other than A/C condensation) and no exterior damage under the car. engine running fine no abnormal noises. Of course was about 100 miles from home so had it towed to the shop last night. ($500 later...)
Shop called and said Front Drive Shaft destroyed, CAT destroyed and a crack in tranny. Looks like I must've hit something on highway...ugh... good times.

What axle broke?
As KEY says, CV joints usually give long warning and when I had CV failure on VW, it simply spin inside.
Than on other forum member was ignoring front driveshaft UV joint symptoms till the thing blow on his driveway setting off several airbags.

I'd call your insurance on this one, (and I never say that). If you hit something and it did this you should be covered. This may total your car. I'd also take it to a dealer for repair if insurance is covering it.

If it is did the front end of shaft fall on road and cause impact on transfer case/gear box and crack it?
