E550 reliability and common problems?
Yes, turbo upgrade would be nice, but with the amout of work required and how cheap the w212r amg's are getting, I think when I get bored of the stage 2 I'll start thinking of upgrading to one.
Agreed, waayyy too soft for hard cornering. Again, the amg would have us beat hands down with performance suspension setup.

2014 E550 4MATIC TUNED - Turbo Upgraded Stage 3
Keeping up with a stock amg for nearly half the price is fine by me lol...

I did all the upgrades almost 3 years ago.
Now, those turbos are dirt cheap!!! You guys should go for it if you want it go FAST. But make sure you have local or reputable tuners to dyno tune your car.
I have been killing stock AMGs and M cars on the road. Lots of fun!!! all fo them dropped their jaw........
If you have a w212 facelift E550, i would upgrade to W213 E63s when it gets 50K price mark.
w213 E63s is the way to go. Just a tune, it goes under 11 sec 1/4 miles. Thats super car territory.
But as i know w213 E63s is also with Airmatic on all wheels. Not like w212 only the rear is Airmatic.
Hopefully, its not softtttt compare to hydraulic.
Now, i am wanting a Panamera turbo!!! That cornering my buddy did, i'll never forget. but the cost is....xxxxxxxxxx
or ill just change Airmatic to Hydraulic or Coilover.

I am also in the market for a E550 here in NY so this thread was great information. I am tempted to settle for a E400 as its easier to find but then I know I will regret not having that V8 growl. Thanks for the info!

The E550 was more limited in the US, last year was the 2014. The E400 is newer. There's only a very limited number of them out there.
My 2014 e550 is for sale in the classifieds, but it is pending sale on Friday. Sucks to see it go, but we wanted a manual transmission and that was the only reason for the sale. Personally I didn't want to sell the e550 and only listed it on this forum, and not a mainstream site like Autotrader. I had multiple inquiries and am going with a Buyer that seemed easiest to work with.
Don't do it! Hold out for the e550 or low end AMG. The e400 is blah and you will wish you had the bigger engine.

Ours also never had any issues, routine stuff like the panoramic sunroof's bolts needed to be retorqued due to an annoying rattle. Once we got a check engine light which ended up being a software update. Solid car to own and very fun to drive.
I can't compare the E550 biturbo to the E400, but just tickling the throttle on my M278 is generally grin-inducing and eye-opening. Vroom! (But a quiet vroom)
My E550 w/M278 doesn't growl. It's very quiet, including at WOT all things considered. I've read here that you can wake it up with various exhaust mods, but it's a quiet car - by design, I'm sure - from the factory.

The growl I meant and is looking for is the aftermarket one after exhaust and tune... But mostly also want that grin-inducing Vroom
My E550 biturbo has straight pipes(mufflers, and both resonators removed and replaced with 2.5" pipe) and it sounds great! I'll see if I can post a short clip of cold start when I get to my phone...

2014 E550 4MATIC TUNED - Turbo Upgraded Stage 3
2012 had chain tensioner issues, which I had replaced by Carmax at MB dealer over a month ago. I knew about that issue going in because of this forum. Highly recommend getting one! Mine currently sits in the garage with 12k miles on it (I was patient and looked for a year). I avoided ones with Airmatic just to not deal with the hassle.

Sounds amazing!! Have any sound vids of revs/pulls?
Does anyone have a rough maintainence/ownership cost over one year? Will it be comparable to my 2012 c63?
I assume mileage will be slightly better, but oil changes, brakes, tires, fluids, etc should all be very similar, correct?

If you keep your C63 like new, do the same to E550 should be no issue.
