Why I practice 5,000KM/3,000 miles oil change

.

Well.... being in one of the worst traffic congested city in the world, I use 200 engine hours as the limit, which translate to 5,000 KM / 3,000 miles.
20,000 / 24 = Total 833 engine hours since day 1, approx. Today the car is 20,000 KM old.

24 KM/H average is decent, sometime between fuel fill I get 21 KM/H average.
This is my driver's 95% of the time driving the car and hence superb mileage at 7.63 KM per liter or 17.96 MPG, for a 1,900kg car with 333HP..... for my city.

This is my typical mileage. Heavy foot I am and 5 KM out of the 6KM is actually on a highway. 21 KM/H is the more typical average speed for my city. So sad for a mid noon Sunday drive.

Got this 2014 car pre-owned , at 9,500 KM old in May 2017. I don' think the original owner which ever changed the trans-oil.
I last replaced the trans oil at 10,500KM on Aug 2018 or at 4 years old and it makes a world of difference.
BTW, the automatic transmission for me now is a 20,000KM / 12,400 miles or 2 years max . Next trans oil change will be Aug 2020.

In my manual cars and including the lawsuit proven dual clutch piece-of-garbage transmission on a Ford Fiesta 1.6L , I do 2-1 oil change for engine and transmission.
5,000 KM for engine and 10,000KM for transmission or 6 months/ 12 months.

My Mazda of 2 years old and 32,000KM also world of difference in auto transmission response after trans oil change.
I don't believe Mazda's 50,000KM or 4 years for auto-trans oil change, let alone MB's 75,000KM or 5 years.

The amount of stop and go and creeping, is plain insane due to the traffic in my city.
On a side note : This car at D2 can creep/inch so very slow, I am honestly impressed. This is the best creeper I ever owned... LOL.

Look at the wear rate on the brake pads per the last 10,000 KM / 6,200 miles. This is 95% my driver very polite & gentle driving.
If the 10,000KM were by my foot, expect 50% higher wear rate.

These brake pads I think is a safe 25,000 KM ( 15,500 miles ) useful life, while leaving 15% pad behind.

Mercedes Indonesia understood this crazy traffic of Jakarta, hence oil change alarm is set at 8,000KM or 4,968 miles and the car get the +600 *ml extra oil capacity ( *by using different oil dipstick ??? or how ?? )

I agree with you. Stop-and-go driving is harder on the oil, and 200 hours seems reasonable.

I change my engine oil every 5000 miles and I'm on highway 85% of the time so I am actually crazier than you are...

In where you are I would get a scooter like a few others in your neighborhood did...

Your 5,000 miles is VERY good. Its not crazy. Oil is too cheap to save $$ on.
In the 80s, when Mobil 1 was new to me, I dare to do 10,000KM, average speed was much better and I was not living in this crazy traffic congested city back then.
In the late 90s , 7,500KM oil life was still okey with me.

Scooter ( must be full-auto trans) I can't ride well, even though I am decent with bicycle. Too scarry anyway and I value my life + comfort.

Personally I am half retired for the last 3 years and work from home since ages ago.
I stop diving too the last 10 years, so I don't clock much mileage anymore on weekends where I used to need to drive +-350KM return trip to
southern side of my island/state to access the Indian Ocean.

Driving in the city now its like a nightmare and I miss my daily drive manual cars, but I would probably get Deep vein thrombosis if I still keep manual cars for city daily drive.
The city also now since 2016 enforce restrictions based on ODD and EVEN licence number ( we don't have personalized licence plate with names like USA ) , where the last digit counts.
So the business district and some busy area, on ODD dates , only a car with last digit ODD number can roam free at the restricted hours of 6am-10am and 4pm-9pm Monday to Friday.
It is a stupid and desperate decision by the governor and I think this is a human rights abuse...LOL.
